      * NEXT WEEKS GEONETCOM SEMINAR

We had a change in schedule for next weeks GeonetCom Seminar. Instead of
showing "Mapping Analyzing and Distributing Facilities Data with Time
Warner" we will be presenting "Learn how AT&T and Sprint brought their
      GIS
to the Web." This seminar will be presented by Dan Richards of POND
      Co., and
promises to be very informative. Dan will be demonstrating the actual
      GIS
Web Sites for AT&T and Sprint and will explain how they were created
      and the
technology used. Dan is very "hands on" so come prepared with your
questions! Everyone in the communications industry should plan to
      attend.

      * NEW GIS SOLUTION FOR ELECTRIC COMPANIES

Electric Industry members, I am very excited tell you know about a new
solution from Autodesk called PowerLine. With Autodesk PowerLine you can
access, query, and combine any data - distribution maps, customer
information, outage data, facilities inventories, vehicle locations, and
engineering drawings - on your company intranet or extranet. This
      solution
will be featured in our next GeonetCom seminar, Georgia Power, on
      Tuesday,
January 11. This is pretty amazing technology. I highly encourage
      everyone
in the Electric industry who is interested in spatial information as
decision support to take a look at this product. For more information on
      PowerLine, please come to: <http://www.geonetcom.com/powerline.html>

      * LINKS TO GIS SITES

One of the most requested additions to GeonetCom News is links to real
      GIS
sites in our industries. Autodesk.com has an excellent list of GIS sites
with descriptions, and links to the MapGuide viewer (FREE). All
      GeonetCom
members have access to this site. If you would like to see how the Web
      is
changing the way we do business, come to:

        * GIS/MAPPING FOR TELCOM
The sixth GeonetCom seminar was presented last week by Pond and
Company, an Atlanta based consulting firm. In the presentation, Daniel
Richards and his colleagues describe success factors for an
        Internet/intranet GIS that leverages a company's or government agency's
investment in GIS. Their insight comes from having implemented twelve
        (12)
Internet/intranet solutions for such clients as AT&T, Sprint, and Barrow
County, Georgia, USA, in the past year. According to Richards, success
        for
companies and agencies with a GIS comes from providing free access to
        up-to-date and easy-to-use geospatial data.
Pond and Company has been able to create successful implementations
for its clients by using Autodesk's MapGuide GIS and Allaire's
        ColdFusion
web-based data server, which comes bundled with MapGuide. This product
        is an
        off-the-shelf, easy-to-customize, rapid-deployment application that
        serves
vector and raster data from almost any GIS or CAD application, including
AutodCAD Map 2000, ESRI Arc/Info and ArcView, and MapInfo. Autodesk
        MapGuide
also serves attribute data from any ODBC-compliant database, such as
        Oracle
        and Microsoft Access.
In a quick demonstration of one implementation, Richards and his
colleagues showed how MapGuide serves rich geospatial data used by AT&T
        and
Sprint, two of the world's the leading telecommunications companies. In
        a
second demo, they showed a parcel data server for Barrow County that
demonstrates the powerful query, buffering, and reporting capabilities
        of
MapGuide in an Internet or intranet application.

        * ARCHIVES POSTED
PowerPoint slides for "Georgia Power" and "GIS/Mapping for Telcos"
Seminars are available on http://www.geonetcom.com in the Seminar
        Archive
section. The streaming media versions of both these seminars will be
        posted
this week. If you missed either of these presentations, I highly
        recommend
that you take a moment to review them. Both offer invaluable
        information on
how major industry players are using GIS to gain a competitive
        advantage.

        NEXT WEEK"S GEONETCOM SEMINAR
        Pima County, Arizona
Getting onto the Internet and staying there. Over a two-year period,
Pima County has implemented an incredible Internet based GIS system.
Moderators Jack Lloyd, GIS Manager, and John Dickson, Database
        Specialist,
of Pima County, Arizona focus on how Pima County leverages its current
        GIS
software and data investment with Autodesk MapGuide to dramatically
        reduce
the number of map requests. To register for this seminar, come to
