For the 3rd year, Council Member Brewer is partnering with Volunteers of America for Operation Backpack. One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the disruption of education among school-age children. There are nearly 9,000 families with 16,000 children living in the New York City shelter system on any given night. Most of these children will go back to school in September without basic school supplies, unless we help. Operation Backpack is Volunteers of America’s annual back-to-school drive that asks the general public to donate new backpacks filled with supplies. Council Member Gale A. Brewer’s District Office is the only site citywide that will be accepting backpacks after the August 17 deadline. Please drop off your donation in the upcoming weeks at 563 Columbus Avenue at 87 Street in Manhattan. For information including posters and grade-specific supply lists and backpack labels, or to underwrite the cost of a backpack, please visit www.operationbackpacknyc.org or contact the office of Council Member Brewer at 212-873-0282.
