I hadn't noticed that, but would put it down to variations in how Phil
happened to draw them from panel to panel.

That occurred to me as well. Perhaps they're artificial eyes, that
Van Rijn made for himself. We know that clanks can see, so why
shouldn't it be possible to make eye replacements for a human?
