Group Description

This group celebrates the life and career of George Reeves, actor and humanitarian, made famous for his role as Superman/Clark Kent on "The Adventures of Superman" in the 1950s. This group primarily focuses on George Reeves' early life and his family's beginnings in the Midwest, particularly Iowa and Illinois.

An exhibit about him has been created (2007) and can be seen at the Heartland Museum in Clarion, Iowa. Funds are gathered to help pay expenses of exhibit maintenance and other projects. Members from GRM celebrate George Reeves in many different ways. This forum is set up as a communication tool to express ideas, projects, and other wonderful things going on to remember him.

GRM originally hoped to restore George Reeves' birthplace, but funding could never get off the ground, and the type of home it is did not qualify it for many local and national grants. The owners of the home decided in late 2008 that the birthplace and early home of George Reeves would need to be destroyed because of its deteriorating condition. Because of unresolved tension within the local community about placing a marker to honor George Reeves, the planned Tribute Marker project was abandoned for fear of vandalism and privacy issues around the birthplace property.

Regardless of these outcomes, members and county officials hope that the issue may be resolved in the future and that Woolstock residents will learn to celebrate this native son more respectively.

For those interested in talking about George's extensive life history and career, esp. as Superman in The Adventures of Superman, we would like to suggest you visit other forums that would be more appropriate located at yahoogroups or googlegroups.
