      Thank you so much for the link. I am so sorry that I won't be in the state to go the the April or June listings below. I especially would love to hear Margaret Hofmann. Have really benefited from her books. Also appreciated the Tar River Connections workshop notice. It was a very enjoyable meeting and enjoyed meeting some really great people. Rhet

      Smithfield Walking Tours
      26 April 2003
      Tours begin at the Smithfield Town Commons and highlights the 225 years of Smithfield History and 257 years of Johnston County
      History. The tours highlight historical events, architecture, and politics of Johnston County and North Carolina.
      Tours begin at 10:00 am and leave on the hour - last tour at 4:00 pm
      All tours are free and open to the public on a first come, first serve basis.

      300 Years of NC Patents and Grants by Margaret M. Hofmann
      7 June 2003
      Margaret M. Hofmann has published in eight volumes, in abstract form, the extant land patents and land grants from North Carolina's
      Colonial era as found in the North Carolina Secretary of State's holdings. She is presently preparing for publication abstracts of the
      North Carolina State Grants beginning in 1778. Volume One of this new series came out in May 1999. She is a native of Raleigh. She
      has published genealogical reference books for nearly thirty years. In addition to the publications already mentioned, her more than a
      dozen and a half titles include wills and deeds at the county level and two "how to" books beginning and intermediate genealogical
      researchers. She is a charter member of the NC Genealogical Society of which she was a Board member and Publications Chairman
      when the North Carolina Research Volume 1 was first published in 1980. The National Genealogical Society honored her in 1990 with
      the Award o! f Merit for her contribution to genealogy and she was the 1986 winner of the prestigious McDaniel Lewis Historian of the
      Year Award given by the North Carolina Society of Historians, Inc. On April 12, 1999 she received from the Historic Halifax Restoration
      Association the Halifax Resolves Award for Lifetime Support of Historic Preservation. The one day workshop will be held at Centenary
      United Methodist Church, Market Street, Smithfield, NC. The workshop will be from 10 am to 3 pm and lunch is provided in price of
      registration. Cost will $15.00.

      Lecture 2 First Owners in State Grant Period to 1960
      Lecture 3 Nine Categories of County Records
      Lecture 4 Search for the Old Court House

      Johnston County Plantation Tour
      21 June 2003
      Tour will be headed by Ray King and will highlight a number of antebellum plantation houses known for their historical importance and
      architectural interest. The tour includes 15 houses and 1 church. These are truly architectural gems that are off the beaten path.
      All of these tours are external only. Please check for updated details as they become available.
