On 10/3 I sent out an email with the subject heading, Thompson's
Directory 1851-1852, to 3 mail lists: NC-Martin, NC-Dobbs, & PCFR.
received a reply back for that subject on 10/4 with an attachment 50,688
bytes in length. Being suspicious of any unsolicited or unwarned of
attachment, I did some quick checking and voila, the BugBear virus, was
Conclusion to be drawn: someone on these three lists has the BugBear
I would urge all to:
1) make sure that your anti-virus program patterns are up to date & run
scan of all files.
2) if you receive an unsolicited email, even from someone you know,
before downloading! This is a smart "bug" as it will spoof the prefix
address and pair it with the suffix of another to create a false from
address, i.e., my email address is bjmarkland@...
and someone else
. The virus is perfectly capable of creating a new From
address of bjmaarkland@...
. It could also the take the entire
VERIFY BEFORE DOWNLOADING ANYTHING!!!!!!
3) If you are going to send someone a file, be sure to send that
with no attachment, ahead of time the information about the file, such
Name and suffix, length, and when you plan on sending it.
4) Beware of any file that has a double-suffix, i.e., filename.doc.pif.
Also, BugBear currently has a payload of 50,688 bytes. I say currently
the developers of these usually modify / enhance them to fool anti-virus
Both Norton.com & Mcafee.com offer a free tool to remove the virus if
detected. If for some reason you don't have a current anti-virus
you can go to Trend Micro for a free on-line scan. That URL is:
