Subject: New Bern Library Events for the 300th Anniversary: EarlyBird
      Deadline Approaching Fast!

Just a reminder that the Early-Bird Registration for the event on May 22 is
this Friday. Save $10 off of the price by registering now! Also, Hampton Inn
in New Bern is reserving a block of rooms at a discounted rate ($97 per
night). You must contact them directly (252.637.2111) by May 10 to receive
      the discounted rate.

In celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the founding of New Bern by Swiss
and German-Palatine settlers, the New Bern-Craven County Public Library is
sponsoring two programs featuring the Palatine researcher, Henry Z. "Hank"
      Jones, Jr.

First, on Friday night, May 21, at 7 p.m. will be a FREE lecture titled "The
Palatines: Profiles in Courage." This program will be at Orringer Auditorium
on the campus of Craven Community College (Glenburnie Road near the 70
By-Pass). The lecture will discuss the history of the Palatines and their
subsequent immigration to England and America.

Secondly, an all day genealogical seminar will be held Saturday, May 22,
      beginning at 9 a.m. and ending around 4 p.m. Pre-registration is requested
and forms can be found on the library's website at
http://newbern.cpclib.org/research. There is a fee involved with this
seminar ($40 if registered on or before May 7; $50 after). The fee covers
lunch and workshop materials. The schedule of seminar topics is also
      available on the library's website.

Direct any questions to me off-list, as I may not be subscribed to some of
      the lists.

Subject: [NCCRAVEN] Events in New Bern for the 300th Anniversary

There is more going on the rest of this year to celebrate the 300th
Anniversary of the settlement of New Bern than one can possibly attend
and much of it is historical and genealogical in nature in addition to the
event in July that David French has told us about. For those who live
close enough to attend you might want to check out the schedule at

      http://www.newbern300.com/

If you visit New Bern, make sure you check out the "Bears" as they are
really fun to visit - as long as they are not the real ones.

For those of you who have read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, she
will be the featured speaker at lunch on Friday, May 14 at the Convention
Center. Her subject will be the Scots settlers in NC. She knows a lot
about the ones that came in at Wilmington and settled Cross Creek and
further west so it will be interesting to see how much she learns about our
local ones, of which there were many. Nicholas Sparks will be the guest
speaker the next day at lunch.

The NC History Center at the Palace will be open by the end of October and
it will be like no museum you have ever been in - very 20th century high
tech. Adults and children will both love it.

Those of you who live in Kinston no doubt are paying very close attention
to all these events knowing that the 250th Celebration of the settlement of
Kinston is only 2 years away.
