      Dear Hardy/Hardee Cousins:

I really need your help in determining which county William Hardee (b:
app. 1775/1776 -- d: 20 Feb 1850) and his son, Allen Hardee were living
in at the time of the 1840 North Carolina Census. Here is what I
      currently know about these families:

William Hardy/Hardee was a widower by 1840 (formerly married to Nancy
      (Nanza) Barrow?) Their children were:

      (1) Penelope (Perina) Hardee (b: 25 Oct 1797 - d: 25 Aug 1870)
      (2) Unk. Female (b: 1799 - d: Unk.)
      (3) Allen Hardee (b: app. 19 Jan 1802 - d: 28 Dec 1870)
      (4) William Hardee (b: 4 Aug 1805 - d: 15 Oct 1834)
      (5) Martha Hardee (b: 29 Jan 1808 - d: Unk.)
      (6) Franklin Hardee (b: 2 Aug 1810 - d: 29 Jan 1859)
      (7) Nashville Hardee (b: 11 Nov 1813/14 - d: 4 Sep 1888)
      (8) John H. Hardee (b: 4 May 1816 - d: app. 15 May 1904)
      (9) Edna Hardee (b: 1 Feb 1821 - d: Unk.)

I searched the NC. 1840 Census Index and only found one reference to a
William (last name spelled Hardee), who happened to be living in Lenior
      Co., NC. The census shows one white male between the age of 60 and 70;
one white female under the age of 5; one white female between the age of
20-30; and one white female beween the age of 50-60. The age spread for
William Hardee seems about right as he would been app. 38 years old at
the time of the 1840 census. The white female between the age of 20-30
could possibly be a daughter, Edna, who was born in 1821. The children
had probably moved out on their own by 1840. William Hardee's wife,
      Nancy, was deceased before 1840 (b: Unk. - d: 23 Aug 1835), so I have no
clue as to who the white female was (listed between the age of 50-60).
Has any one found my William Hardee living elsewhere in NC.?

      I also searched for Allen Hardee (b: 19 Jan 1802 - d: 28 Dec 1870) (son
of the above William Hardee), who married Marina Moore (b: 19 Oct 1800 -
d: 26 Nov 1858) and found a reference to the name of Allen Hardy, of
Edgecombe Co., listed in the 1840 Census. (Note: They had the following
      children):

      (1) William F. Hardee (b: 19 Oct 1822 - d: 26 Nov 1858)
      (2) Whitmel Hardee (b: 28 Jan 1823 - d: 28 Dec 1896)
      (3) Allen M. Hardee (b: 31 Jul 1825 - d: 16 May 1900)
      (4) Marina Hardee (b: 1 Apr 1828 - d: 5 May 1901)
      (5) Nancy Hardee (b: 1 Apr 1828 - d: 8 May 1905)
      (6) Cornelius Hardee (b: 10 Aug 1831 - d: 28 Jul 1865)
      (7) Epenetus Hardee (b: 1 Mar 1833 - d: 26 May 1911/1913)
      (8) Annis Hardee (b: 24 Apr 1835 - d: 15 May 1861)
      (9) Edwin Hardee (b: 28 Jan 1838 - d: Unk.)
      (10) Emily Hardee (b: 15 Jan 1840 - d: 6 Oct 1915)
      (11) Stanley Hardee (b: 23 Aug 1843 - d: 6 Oct 1915)
      (12) Francis Marion Hardee (b: 8 Nov 1845 - d: 27 Nov 1892)

The Allen Hardee, of Edgecombe Co., NC. (census taker spelled his
surname as: Hardy) is most likely not the person I am looking for, as
there were no children shown living with him in the 1840 Census. Due to
their young age, all of Allen Hardee's children would likely have been
living with him at that time.

My bottom-line query is: Which county and state did William Hardee and
his son, Allen Hardee, reside at the time of the 1840 Census. Were they
living in Pitt Co., NC. even though they are not shown residing there in
      the 1840 NC. Census Index?

Any help or clues you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

      Cousin John
