George Nichols was the husband of Fanny Slaughter. Robert was the brother of George. I don't know who Robert's wife was. From personal family information I know that George and Fannie were married (my great grandparents). Fannie's parents were Mary and John Slaughter. George died in 1888 of a horse accident. George was a book keeper/clerk. Fannie had land and sold it a little at a time to raise her 4 young children. As the children grew they all worked to help with finances.
George and Fannie were born in Pitt Co., but lived in Kinston, NC--evidently to work there at a sawmill where he died. When George died Fannie moved to a farm that they owned between Ayden and Winterville, NC. If you would like more information of the family I'll be glad to answer any other question. Louise

            Dear Louise,
I thank you for this information on my great,
great, great aunt Mary Slaughter. I have been
researching my Worthington-Nichols line since about
1999, but with all the interruptions, I have never had
everything in one place, conveniently summed up. I
also was not sure of some of the dates. Your
information is very helpful to me. Thanks, Carol

              Dear Jean,
Many of our families named sons for politicians. I
believe that the name George in our McGowan, Moore,
and Cherry lines was in honor of George Washington.
So, no, I don't think that George was also Robert
George. If I am mistaken in answering your question, I
am sure that someone will set me straight so that I
don't mislead you or others. Later, Carol

                Your welcome.

I was looking at this family. George & Fannie L.
(Slaughter) Nichols had a son named Jerry Robert
Nichols [20Mar1883-Feb1966]. Why did he have the
                middle name of Robert?

Fanny had no sibling named Robert nor any uncle.
George Nichols also has no uncle named Robert, but he
does have a brother so named.

                  Dear Marcia,
I imagine that the Robert came from our ancestor
Robert Worthington b. 1846 in Craven County, son of
                  Solomon Worthington and Ann.
The Jerry came from Jeremiah of the Bible or
possibly in honor of great, great grandfather Jeremiah
Worthington whose name most likely did come from the
Bible. He had a son Jeremiah "Jerry,"--to distinguish
him from his father--though he was actually Jeremiah,
                  Jr.
The Nichols line has married into both my maternal
and paternal lines down to the present day. Offhand, I
do not recall a Robert in either the Nichols or
Slaughter lines. Maternal line of Slaughter was
Cannon--both Slaughter and Cannon married into
                  Worthington, Dail, and Braxton lines.
We have also my great uncle John Robert Worthington
                  buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
Our "Jerry" Worthington who has a middle name was
the son of my great, great, great, grandfather Ambrose
Worthington and has the middle initial "A," possibly
                  for his father Ambrose.
I do not recall a Robert except in our Worthington
                  line.
If I am mistaken in my "Robert," you won't have
long to wait. Someone of our group will help both of
us out. Good hearing from you, Carol

The information that I have is from census records and family knowledge. We have lost Robert Nichols of 1838--I have found no information at all for him. We don't know where he was buried although Robin Nichols has found all of Arden's other son's graves on Nichols Road. George and Fannie were buried just north of Kinston, NC--Fannie died about 1935 or so. My uncles remember the funeral, they told me that it is just north of Kinston. We haven't been able to find it because of the new highway there. My aunts and uncles loved and respected Fannie Slaughter, Nichols very much. She lived with Jerry Robert and his family for many years (in her older age).

I wonder if Robert (George's brother) died and my grandfather, Jerry Robert, was named after him. And the Jerry may have come from his Uncle Jeremiah Ronald Nichols (Arden's youngest son from his second marriage). In the 1860 census Arden still has five of his sons living with him. They are 26, 25, 19, 18 and 16. Robert would have been 22, but he isn't listed. I don't know if he married or died. By the way my grandfather is Jerry Robert, my father is Leroy Jerry, my brother is Leroy Jerry Jr. and my sister is Geraldine. Surprisingly she was the only one that we called "Jerry".

When Arden married for the second time he named his two children Jeremiah Ronald (1871) and Minnie Lurana (1870). I am hoping to find that Jeremiah (died May 15, 1795) and Lurana Flowers, Nichols are our direct ancesters. Sorry, I didn't mean to write a book. Louise

                      Dear Louise,
Fannie Slaughter was the daughter of my great,
great, great aunt Mary Polly Worthington, daughter of
my great, great, great grandfather Spire or Speir
Worthington. I would have given the world to have
known Fannie Slaughter Nichols and many of the other
relatives I never had the privilege of knowing because
we had moved to Richmond, Virginia before I was 12
                      years old.
It's group members like you who give us the
precious gift of ties with those we love but never
would have known except through your thoughtfulness in
                      sharing.
My cousin Linda Nichols, a direct descendant of
Fannie, is working on a book about her family. Just
last fall, she put together a brief summary of these
relatives including pictures of them through the
years. She may be able to help you in locating the
cemetery. I will see if I can reach her at home
tomorrow morning and get back to you.
                      Later, Carol

                                Dear John,
Almost certainly there are mentions of Jeremiah in
the Quarterlies of the Pitt County Family Researchers
that I have at home. Also you can go to the PCFR web
at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncpcfr and go through both
on-line resources and related links to learn more. I
especially like the web of Lisa Scarola, "Some Pitt
County McGowans and Sermons" because it covers nearly
all of us. I cannot count the hours I have spent at
this site nor count the rewards I have gotten thereby.
Also Roger Kammerer's incredible contributions to
the on-line resources along with those of Bill
Kittrell and Elizabeth Ross--cemetery records, photos,
history, marriage records, census and family records.
                                It's a gold mine.

                                  Carol,
Thanks, I would love to order those. If you get a chance, can you let me
know what issues they are and I will order back issues? In the meantime, I
am going to sign up. I think Bill Kittrell sent me a copy of his tree last
year and I got a lot if info to add to mine. I am up to about 250 people now
and my daughter is excited as I am. Thanks again for all your help.
Shortly after I moved to Michigan in 1999, I found out that I had family
from Pitt County here, so I looked up the only suvivor at the time. Samuel
Lewis Flake Jr. He had a sister named Peggy Flake, children of Bessie
Nichols (Jeremiah's Daughter) and Samuel Flake Sr. That was neat to find
                                  family here I never known.

                                    Dear John,
I have had a similar experience here in Richmond,
Viginia. I never knew I had a single Virginia tie much
less a relative living here. I was able to trace the
Cherry family to its arrival in Norfolk, Virginia in
                                    1632.
Even later, I found roots in Calvert County,
                                    Maryland.
It has been so exciting and rewarding. That's what
                                    keeps me at it.
                                    Later, Carol
