I am hoping that someone can tell me if in fact Samuel was in GA. What is Nancy's maiden name-they named their son William Churchwell-could she have been Nancy Churchwell? Who are their parents? If they did in fact go to GA, when? Any and all information would be appreciated. Samuel Little born est 1795, is a huge brickwall. Thank you so much. My grandmother was Retha Little Kittrell, from Winterville.

      Sincerely,

      DaniSue Jones Overton

I have noticed recently a lot of Little families being listed.

Is anyone researching Leonidas Little and his wife Kate Little? Leonidas was a merchant and Kate was a school teacher in Old Sparta.

I am especially interested in the Kate Boyette 1835 -1923 line. Her mother and father were Payton and Zelphia Boyette. Does anyone know if Zelphia was a Bryant? The children of Payton and Zelphia Boyette were John E., William Ann, Catharine (Kate), Rebecca, Isabella, Ferdenand, Nancy, Lucy, and David.

Leonidas Little 1832 - 1887 was the son of Frederick Dinkins Little, Sr. 1800 -1855 and his wife Harriet R. Knight 1813 -1852.

                    Dear John,
Nichols married into my Worthington line several
centuries ago. Then in this generation Linda Martha
Nichols married my first cousin, Alfred Poe
Worthington, Jr. son of my uncle Alfred Poe
Worthington. Uncle Poe was my mother's younger
brother. Linda's mother's line is Willoughby; her
                    father's Nichols.
Our Worthingtons descend from Solomon Worthington
of Craven County--Solomon, Ambrose, Spire, Jeremiah,
Alfred, Alfred, and Clyde--my mother--daughter of
Alfred "Alp" Worthington. He married his first cousin,
                    Jenny Secession McGowan.
Uncle Poe married Doris Louise Hardee--Pitt County
Chronicles II, for my bio of her.
My Uncle Mark, Mark Howard Worthington, never
married. My brother was named for him. Both my brother
and I named sons for him.
Our mother married Elbert Lee Braxton, son of
Dosie Dail and Elijah Braxton of Greenville.
It is great meeting new kin. This group is
absolutely wonderful about sharing its information.

Does anyone have the parents of Martha J. Williams?

I'm not even sure this is correct.

I'm working on my father's maternal line, his mother's, mother's,
mother's.....like that because I'm having his DNA tested for that line. It
will only tell racial makeup and possibly country of origin way back. I
thought some of you who have ties might be interested. I'll share the
results when I get them. I've already done the Y-DNA and it just shows
matches with other men of exact genetic makeup. It doesn't show racial
makeup. It did give me a clue that my father's Bakers were possibly from
England, more of a chance of that than any other. He was in the R1b1 group,
the most common group that came from Europe. Some of the Bakers in the
study tested in the J group; they had Middle Eastern ties; some the them
were maybe from the Moses Baker line from Edgecombe. (Not all the Bakers
who are testing are from NC. They are from everywhere, even England.) It
was a surprise, I think. They are still trying to figure it out the middle
eastern connection. It's all very interesting, but I don't understand it
all. The man that my father matched had ancestors from Greene Co, which
didn't surprise us. We are still two markers off, which means the relation
is probably way back, we figure at least 1800 when William Baker and James
Baker of Greene Co were born.

We are still trying to figure out who the Benjamin Baker in Greene County in
1820 and 1830 is. We don't know if he is one of the ones from Pitt County.
It looks like he's born abt. 1750s or so. He could be Benjamin Baker who
married Elizabeth Baker in Perquimins. Or, he could be one of the Gates
County Bakers who migrated over to Pitt. We are in the process of going
through William Murphy's papers, but on one sheet, Mr. Murphy professes that
he can't identify one of the Benjamin Bakers of Pitt, that he could be a
grandson of one of the older Bakers there. I THINK my Bakers had some
relation to the ones from Pitt and I think they were related to others from
Greene. You know, Blaney Baker started out in Greene and moved to Pitt. He
was married to Mary Garrett, the sister of Shadrach Garrett. Blaney could
have been a brother to my James Baker who was b. ab.t 1804.

I guess you can tell I'm running off at the mouth. We need a break in this
                              case.

I need help with my father's maternal line.

Bertha Manning, daughter of Thomas B. Manning and Mary Elizabeth Stocks

Mary Elizabeth Stocks, daughter of Guilford Stocks and Dicey E. Mills

Dicey E. Mills, daughter of William Mills and Martha J. Williams

Does anyone have the parents of Martha J. Williams?

I'm not even sure this is correct.

Paula, Could this be your Martha Jane Williams in this household in 1850? This Martha J. Williams appears to have a mother and a sister named Dicey. • 1850

                                Paula,

Could this be your Martha Jane Williams in this household in 1850?

                                Dicey.

                                      Paula,

Could this be your Martha Jane Williams in this household in 1850?
This Martha J. Williams appears to have a mother and a sister named
                                      Dicey.

                                       1850 Census, Pitt County, NC
                                      Household #711
                                      WILLIAMS, Samuel, 65 M, Far., 105
                                      Dicey, 54 F (Harris)*
                                      Joel, 22 M
                                      Emeline, 19 F
                                      Martha J., 17 F
                                      Dicey M., 13 F (= Jess Abner Stocks)*
                                      Samuel, 11 M
*The two notes in parentheses are not mine, but were notes made in
the transcribed copy of this census.

Note: There seems to be confusion about which Dicy Williams married
Jesse Abner Stocks. { This note is mine; I think I made it because
someone else said this Dicey married a McGowns. I don't know which
                                      is correct.

                                      Trish

The excerpt below is from Pitt Family Chronicles. Thomas Bragg Manning was
not a direct descendant of Marcom Manning. This article as it appears is
incorrect so I didn't post all of it. Somehow two genealogies were combined
into one, an easy mistake to make. Don Manning, one of my distant cousins,
researched the Thomas Bragg Manning family and corrected the mistake for me.
I guess I should have posted it in the revised Pitt Family Chronicles.

                                        THOMAS BRAGG MANNING FAMILY

Thomas Bragg Manning was born May 10, 1855, in Pitt County, the third of
five children of William Ashley Manning and Mary Elizabeth Sutton Manning.
He was their only child to have heirs to carry on the family name.
Thomas Bragg (Tom) grew up on the family farm which was then on the edge of
Greenville, North Carolina-location now is on the east side of Dickinson
Avenue where the Keel Warehouse is and includes the land on which the
Garris-Evans Lumber Company is located. The family cemetery is behind
Garris-Evans. This farm was left to his mother by her parents, John Sutton
                                        and Julia Jenkins Sutton.
Tom's childhood was during the days of reconstruction following the Civil
War, and public education was nil in Pitt County at the time. Tom obtained
what schooling was available from local private schools. His parents paid
ten cents per day for this schooling.
On December 1, 1886, Thomas Bragg Manning married Mary Elizabeth (Mollie)
Stocks, daughter of William Stocks and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Tyson Stocks. The
minister was Richard Williams, and the marriage was witnessed by Ben
                                        Sheppard and C. M. Tucker.
Records at Salem College show that Lizzie Tyson Stocks attended Salem
College for one year in 1861 when she was 17 years old. She was the
daughter of Lemuel Tyson and Eliza Vines Tyson.
Tom and Mollie lived with his parents the first year of their marriage.
There, they had a child born on September 25, 1887 that died the same day.
Then they moved to the Noah Williams Farm across the Tar River on the old
Highway 264. There, Frank Brown Manning was born on August 19, 1888 and
James Thomas Manning, Sr. was born on August 17, 1890.
Later, they moved about three miles west of Greenville on the Stantonsburg
Road into the house in which Mollie's parents lived before they moved to
Greenville. There, William Warren Manning (Bill) was born on February 26.
                                        1893.
The will of Tom's mother, Mary Elizabeth Sutton Manning, was made on
October 24, 1890, and left the farm to son, Charles Fisher, and daughter,
Jean Manning, (who were unmarried at the time) and John W., Thomas Bragg,
and Julia Manning Evans were left $300.00 each in cash money. The will was
probated June 20, 1891. Tom's wife, Mollie, sewed his $300.00 in one of her
petticoat pockets and added to it every dollar she could from their farm
income until, finally, on December 26, 1895, they had enough money ($600.00)
to purchase from W. B. Brown the 50-acre farm known as the B. F. Manning
Farm (not related to Thomas Bragg Manning). In 1905, Mollie Manning
purchased 20 acres woodsland in the pocosin; and, in 1917, she purchased six
                                        more acres.
It was on this farm that Tom and Mollie lost two baby girls-Mamie Victoria
born October 16, 1895 and died on November 30, 1895, and Lizzie Virginia
born August 23, 1897 and died September 30, 1898. So, they were thrilled
beyond words when Bertha Tollena Manning was born on July 21, 1905.
Tom was an avid sportsman and would rather fish, hunt and trap than work on
the farm, and he spent much of his life doing just that. Before dawn many
mornings of the week, he would arise, walk two and one-half miles to the
river, fish or trap and then walk two and one-half miles back home. The

I think I have it all wrong. I know Mary Elizabeth Stocks married Thomas
Bragg Manning. I need to start over.

                                        Paula,

Could this be your Martha Jane Williams in this household in 1850?
This Martha J. Williams appears to have a mother and a sister named
                                        Dicey.

                                         1850 Census, Pitt County, NC
                                        Household #711
                                        WILLIAMS, Samuel, 65 M, Far., 105
                                        Dicey, 54 F (Harris)*
                                        Joel, 22 M
                                        Emeline, 19 F
                                        Martha J., 17 F
                                        Dicey M., 13 F (= Jess Abner Stocks)*
                                        Samuel, 11 M
*The two notes in parentheses are not mine, but were notes made in
the transcribed copy of this census.

Note: There seems to be confusion about which Dicy Williams married
Jesse Abner Stocks. { This note is mine; I think I made it because
someone else said this Dicey married a McGowns. I don't know which
                                        is correct.

                                        Trish

                                          Paula,

There are so many people with the same name and it is
so easy to mix them up. I have two people with a birth
                                          name of Mary Elizabeth Stocks.

Per Linda F. Harris, Mary Elizabeth Stocks was born 30
May 1888 to Guilford Stocks & Dicey Elizabeth Mills,
who were married in 1883. She married W. Henry Lang 06
Sep 1903 in Pitt County and they had 18 children. She
                                          died 18 Dec 1968.

My other Mary Elizabeth Stocks, whom I have married to
Thomas Bragg Manning was born abt 1866. I have her
parents as William A. Stocks, Sr. & Elizabeth 'Lizzie'
Tyson, who were married 24 Dec 1862 in Pitt County.

I hope this helps your research.

I did not have Bertha Tollena Manning as Thomas Bragg
                                          Manning's daughter. I only hade 5 children.

I have the same information on both Mary Elizabeth's that Marcia has. I do
have Berth Tolen b. 1905 as d/o Thomas Bragg Manning, m. William Baker. I
knew of the Bakers that lived in the Red Oak community west of Greenville.
I lived out there in the 1940s and early 1950s The Benjamin F. Manning (s/o
Linnington & Cinderilla Manning) cemetert is located in that community
behind where Mr. Tom Manning lived (this was Don, Charles, Claude, J. T.,
and Wardell's father). I visited Don there many times as he and I graduated
                                              from high school together.

In the Manning cemetery behind Garris-Evans Lumber is buried Bertha Leonia
                                              b. 1874 d. 1905 wife of R. M. Kennedy. Also in same cemetery is Tolena
                                              Manning b. 1890 d. 1918 w/o F. B. Manning.

about retirement. They quite literally worked until
they dropped in their tracks. It is wonderful that you

                                                  Dear Paula,
This family story is priceless. It makes us keenly
aware of the hardships and heartache that many of our
kin endured. Their perseverance is an inspiration. The

today to follow. Finally, farm families never thought
about retirement. They quite literally worked until
they dropped in their tracks. It is wonderful that you
have so much information on this family and thoughtful
of you to share it with us. Later, Carol
