Does anyone have information on a John H. Griffin who married Harriet Bass
March 25, 1888, in the Castalia Township, Nash County, NC? I'm looking for
his parents and the where-abouts of their five living children and or
cemetery. I do have information on Roxy and Johnnie J. and who they married,
but that's all. They were reared in the Elm City area, Toisnot Township,
Wilson County, NC. Harriet was my great aunt.

          Linda Bottoms Bass

PS: I'm also looking for the Anderson B. Robbins family. He married Celestia
Ann Bass (AKA Puss Bass) December 28, 1890. What I need is the location of
their graves. I have everything else except their death dates.

            Jeff,

I do not research these names, but I do have some unverified information on Randall Clayton Davenport and wife Charity Whitehurst that I will share.

First, I have Charity as the daughter of Marshall Dixon Whitehurst [13May1826 - 7Jun1907] and his wife Mary Elizabeth Taylor [Sep1835 - 1908] - both are burried in Thigpen Graveyard. I have dribbles of Marshall's male line back to Richard Whitehurst, II [birth abt 1690 - death before 18Jul1765]. I have Mary's Taylor line back to Richard Taylor, Sr [birth 1641] and his wife Margaret Manning [1644 - 1679] of Norfolk county, Virginia.

Second, I have a note that Randall and Charity had ten children. I have only 4 names: William Hardy D. [1Jan1853, married Martha Elizabeth Meeks 15Dec1876 - I have 10 children]; Rufus R. D. [married Nancy Jane Weathersbee 11Sep1889]; Dolphus C. Davenport [6May1864 - 24Oct1936, married Maggie Ella Shivers - I have 8 childrren]; and Gillian Davenport [1895 - 2Jan1914].

I hope this information helps - Marcia McLawhorn
I am researching McLawhorn's - no matter how they are spelled.
I also pickup these North Carolina names Phillips & Taylor - Smith, Briley, Johnson, Warters, Hagens, Hinson as well as McCoy, Grimsley, Worthington, Forrest, Spivey, Coward, Harrington

                  Thanks, Marcia.

I don't think that the Charity Whitehurst you have is the same as
the one I'm looking for (my great-great-grandmother) because her
parents birth years don't square with the marriage date of my
Charity Whitehurst to Randall Clayton Davenport.

Thanks though for the exact birthdate and actual middle name of my
                  great-grandfather William Hardy Davenport.

                  Sincerely,
                  Jeff Davenport

Whitehurst and I do hereby constitute and appoint my trusty son Marshal D. Whitehurst my lawful executor to all intents and purposes to execute this my will and testament according to the true interests and meaning of the same, and every part and clause thereof revoking and declaring utterly void all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I the said William Whitehurst hath set my hand and seal this the seventeenth day of December one thousand eight hundred and sixty eight.

I guess there were several William Whitehursts. Does anyone know for sure who is the father of this William Whitehurst and how to document that?

Based on deeds, census records, William's will, and the birth dates of his children, there was no other known William in Pitt County that fits. Also, his fram was near his brother Reuben Whitehurst.

                          Tracy,
The February 12, 1847 will of Dinah Manning Whitehurst, widow of Samuel Whitehurst Sr., names William as her son. Based on deeds, census records, William's will, and the birth dates of his children, there was no other known William in Pitt County that fits. Also, his fram was near his brother Reuben Whitehurst.

                            Tracy,
The only real evidence we have found is a notarized letter written in 1937 by Robert Dawson Whitehurst (grandson of Richard Whitehurst and Polyl Manning) in which he states his grandfather Richard Whitehurst " In 1802 he married Mary Manning, the daughter of Reuben Manning, also of Pitt County, NC., who was born about 1780 also."and "Mary Manning had several sisters, one Dinah Manning who md. Whitehurst, one who md. Jack Moore, and one who md. Richard Whitehurst". Now we know that Mary Manning was called Polly, so they are one and the same. Family history was that Dinah was a Manning, but this is the only proof that we have found.

Lastly, I desire after my death that all of my property that I have on hand that is not included in this my will to be sold at public auction, and the monies arising from said property to be equally divided among my children, that is to say Marshal D. Whitehurst's two children that is to say Almyra Whitehurst and Lafayette Whitehurst one share being the full share of my son William A.

That makes a lot of sense. I need to review some of those census and other records. Thanks for sharing. You do raise another question though that I've probably asked you before, but here goes again.
Is there any real evidence that Dinah's maiden name was Manning?

                                  Tracy,
The February 12, 1847 will of Dinah Manning Whitehurst, widow of Samuel Whitehurst Sr., names William as her son. Based on deeds, census records, William's will, and the birth dates of his children, there was no other known William in Pitt County that fits. Also, his fram was near his brother Reuben Whitehurst.

                                    Susan,

Lona "Lonie" Smith married Jesse R. Whitehurst on 13 March 1909. Jesse was born c1886 and Lona was born c1893. Jesse was a farmer in Chicod township. I have no idea who his parents are, but would love to find out! I have birth records on 3 children for them:
                                    Jesse D. Whitehurst, born 13 August 1923.
Arthur B. Whitehurst, born 8 May 1930 (twin)
Oscar Roy Whitehurst, born 8 May 1930 (twin)

Was the child you named DeWitt possibly the same person as Jesse D.?
What info do you have on their child Elene?

                                    Diane Whitehurst Collins
