Well, while we're talking about nicknames of ancestors, I might as well own
up and let y'all know that my gr-grandfather Alfred Archibald Forbes & his
wife Anastasia Christman Forbes were affectionately known by family and
friends as "Pig" and "Pud." Beats me where the "Pud" came from, but "Pig"
was related to an actual incident that involved a pig chase by my
gr-gr-grandfather, riding his horse wearing only his nightshirt and gun
holster with fully-armed revolver. Details at another time...

      <tt>
Now, that IS a question! What I have been thinking for<BR>
quite a long time, but nobody asked, and I was saying<BR>
nothing. I have to confess (because not even my<BR>
closest relative knows this and you will be the very<BR>
first in the whole world to know) that Mama called me<BR>
"Pussy cat." She thought my character like that of<BR>
Puss-in-Boots who appeared on the cat food labels of<BR>
that brand of cat food. Of course, all of you know<BR>
that your mothers never used your nickname when<BR>
calling you for something you had done wrong--that's<BR>
when the entire world learned all three of your names<BR>
at a momement's notice! Forget about the privacy act.<BR>
What privacy? Others may have been affectionately<BR>
called Puss from the nursery rhyme: "Pussy cat, Pussy<BR>
cat, where have you been? I've been to London to see<BR>
the Queen. Pussy cat, Pussy cat, what did you do<BR>
there? I frightened a little mouse under her chair."<BR>

I sure stirred up a nest of something when I brought up the stories I heard
about tobacco making (at least some) folks sick. That was about a month ago.

Anyway, I sure enjoyed Bob Forbes' reminesences about his three years
primin', pullin', or breakin' tobacco. It certainly had the ring of hard experience
        - and well written as well.

Off Topic? I hardly think so! These kinds of stories bring the character of
our relatives past into full life - the smells, the dew on the tobacco
fields, the hard work and heat, the life -- all these kinds of stories are what
bring out the real reason (for me anyway) of messing with all this Genealogy. I
got started in it because of the family connection with the Civil War/War
Between the States and I really enjoyed learning about that war through my Great
Grandfather's experiences - he was alot more than another entry on the family
tree. Off topic? I hardly think so.

Thanks Bob for sharing your story. It was great!
