Start with what you KNOW. You know your mother's name. Okay, get a copy of
your mother's birth certificate. Why? Because you may be looking for the
wrong name. Now, once you have verified her father's name, you can begin
the search. Do you know where he died? Order his death certificate. This
will tell you when he died, what he died of, who was the "informant", and
where he was buried (and what funeral home handled the service). Then, you
should have enough information to get his birth certificate.

on the time frame you may find him on census records.

If your mother was born before 1930 you might be able to back track if
you can find her on the census.

Census records are available up until 1930.

A couple of subscription sites for census records are ancestry.com and
        genealogy.com.

Hello . I'm new to this so please bear with me.I am having the worst
time finding my mothers father. there seems to be no trace of him
ever existing. His name was Chester Mitchell and he had 12 brothers
and one sister. The only people who knows anything about him are
dead. It now seems that the story of his demise might have been
wrong. I can no record of his death or birth. I have a picture of him
in a U.S. Marine uniform, and I was told the VFW burried him. but
there is no body burried where he is supposed to be. He was raised
aroundsouth Arkansas and north Louisiana. I know this man existed,
but there is no proof of it. Can anyone tell me where to go?

Another thing you can try is contact social security in writing and have them
pull your mothers original social security application with her parents names
on it. Then you can also write the dept of the marines and ask for your
grandfathers military file....also you can request from social security the
oirginal application for your grandfather the will do a search without the ss# but
it takes longer so thats why i'm suggesting your moms even if you dont have
her social you still have her parents names and it will be easier for them to
locate the record. it will show parents names including mothers madien name.
the dept of the marines is very slow and you may have to contact your local
congressman or senator in order to get the matter rushed a litle bit. but it
will be worth the work.....there is a fee for ss to do the search i believe w/
ss# 27.00 w/o 29.00 but i would verify that to make sure the price hasn't
gone up...if you hear back from ss# first on your grandfather ss# then that will
also make the search for his military file faster.....as far as i know that
search is free....sorry it took so long to get back to you but i had to think
back on what i did in a similar situation with a missing uncle...its been a
while since i've done an intensive search like that..hope this helps if you have
any other questions about using these resources u can email me direct at
                    tasanfo@...
