Does anybody know what the procedure was when taking the census in the 1800's? Did the census takers go from door to door and then actually ask the people their last names and how to spell them, did they just ask the people their last names and write the names down like they sounded to them, or did they have some master list that somebody else made up and just record the family without verifying their surname? Sorry if this is a dumb question! :)
      Thanks,
      Ann
