I, unfortunately, have a mac and the programs that are available to
me include the option of listing instead of spouse, "partner" and a
check box to indicate "never married" or in some cases the option to
CHECK "married". Also, you could list the children with the mother's
name instead of the father if that is how they were known. You can
override the auto name function. I hope this helps.

yes, i've heard of it. I'm in the process of trying several different
applications to see which one I like the best. One of the things I am
looking for is the ability to customize and also "master" files that
help with things like location and such. I had a lot of this ability
with Legacy but that is only for windows.

On the thing where say man or women is wed once and has kids by their spouse then later has kids by somebody not spouse. You need to fix the comon person with both partners then list kids under the pair.. For all of them kids should be noted as natural to father and mother but with pairs in the area where would put in married or other for one married put in married.. if it gives other choices such as friend, partner, private, or other pick best one for pair not married. The kids will list under each of the two individuals had them by one individual as natural to both then in marriage it will show one pair married other is what you said they were.

As far as where they may marry after kids born you still put natural for the kids to both father and mother even if they were not married.. Only way to know that something fishy is when look at birth dates and marriage dates and see kids born before marriage.. As there would be no reason to put in wrong dates on kids birth nor marriage date unless just want to cover up fact they born out of wedlock, then figure a marriage date a year before first kid born and use it, or best yet put private since they most likely all living and no need to give all that on living folks. Most of time if make private info on living only you can see it.. and you have to open it to let others see it.... but check your program on what it does when you make it private for a person. As found it best to make anyone living private to protect them and information might have on them.

Then make two trees one with limited information for public view and leave this sort thing off if they are living and might effect them in some way to know this. The other put all your information in and you only can get into it or view it don't give it to others. As have had folks send me trees with all sorts of stuff in them didn't need to or want to know about them..
