                  Thanks, Ken.

The main change from Gamma World is in the area of mutations. Instead of lots of specific mutations with overlapping/complementary powers, I chose to consolidate them. That way, a mutant could produce different affects/results with a power. Or the same power with a different trapping would perform somewhat different.

For example, the "Strike", A.K.A. SWEX Bolt power, with the flame trapping can set things on fire. A frost/cold version of the same power can make items brittle, and the acid version can chew through armor/items.

I'm working on a plot point setting for MA that borrows a bit from the MA1E and MA4E stories, but takes things in a different direction. Since this is my first attempt at a real plot-point campaign, I'm re-writing a lot.

The D20 version put out by White Wolf didn't do all that well. It had a
lot of solid data but was rather scattered and inconsistent. There was
also a Dungeon issue with the short Omega World game that was rather
good but limited. The Savage Worlds version is excellent.

Savage World, on paper, seems a much more natural fit to be. Fast, comic-book style action is the way I see Gamma World.

the rules edition really influences that much. Now it is true that wild
and wacky is sort of the trademark of GW. But there is a large spectrum
between those two poles. I liked a lot of the info in the 6th edition.
But I think it was a hot mess and that effected it's ability to be a
                                          successful product line.
Now, my favorite version, 4th edition, is one slim book and covers it
all. :) Though the Savage Worlds version has that going for it as well.

Of all the editions of Gamma World (& I have played them all except for the recent Savage Worlds Conversion), 6th edition was my least favorite. It seemed to be poorly put together. I did like some elements of it, the community generation section was quite interesting and they added some interesting Cryptic Alliances and beasties. But overall d20 Darwin's World felt more like what Gamma World d20 should have been. Oh and like Tetsubo, I've been able to do grim and gritty with any of the versions of Gamma World that I have GM'ed.

I agree with the view that grim and gritty GW can be done under any of the editions, but the style in which this is done has a lot to do with the edition

I agree with the view that grim and gritty GW can be done under any of the editions, but the style in which this is done has a lot to do with the edition being used.

For instance, imagine a dead landscape, covered in 3 feet of crystalline ash under a grey sky, where flesh-eating nano-clouds swirl about the countryside and killer robots cruise the landscape hunting out humans in the radioactive ruins of an ancient city... get rid of the word "nano" and this could fit any edition. But how a GM would run a campaign in this hypothetical area would be strongly influenced by motivations relating to the role of the characters, as implied by the edition chosen for play.

                                              For a greatly oversimplified example:
GW1 - characters sneek into the ruins seeking to gain the tools rumored to be buried within, for the sake of increasing their personal power.
GW2 - characters sneak into the ruins to gain an artifact to save/improve/defend/promote their community.
GW3 - characters infiltrate the ruins at the urging/command of an influential cryptic alliance with ulterior motives of its own.
GW4 - a band of characters use their skills to investigate the dangers within the ruins, hoping to find something which might help rebuild the world (as they see fit).
GW5 - characters are heroes, by definition, so...
                                              GW6 - depends.
In any situation, the beauty of GW is its flexibility, and its ability to mutate to fill the needs of the players. While Savage Gamma World doesn't fit my gaming needs, I have no problem saying that I can appreciate the quality of the work which was done on it.

                                              - Chris

BTW: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that some of the basic 4th edition GW material (including descriptions of certain armor and robots) was spread out among Treasures of the Ancients, and Gamma Knights. IIRC, that would mean that first edition is the only slim book that covers it all.   - CH

I can do grim and gritty GW under any of the editions. I don't think
the rules edition really influences that much.

Flop is a strong word. Seriously, when it comes down to it, where any editions of Gamma World an actual success?

I personally do not like the 6th edition at all, but I can understand how someone wanting a more detailed and serious mind version of Gamma World might get a lot of use out of it.

Savage World, on paper, seems a much more natural fit to be. Fast, comic-book style action is the way I see Gamma World.

So, I guess there really *isn't* one, slim GW book that covers it all.... ;) Except, maybe, Omega World....

No other rulebooks (including the modules) were necessary.

Though considered "an official part" of GW, the material presented in adventure modules GW1 and GW2 (though important to playing the modules as written) was clearly optional for playing the game itself, it was only urged that they "should be used" (GW2 Famine in Far-Go,pg 30).
But there is another point that is more important to show that my opinion wasn't wrong (although this has nothing to do with Savage Gamma World Revised) --  back when I first started playing GW, the slim grey GW1e rule book actually was "all" that was covered.   :)
