Re : Off The Wall
Yes perhaps the only America-related thing more popular than Michael Jackson in Bitam and elsewhere around the country would be Coca Cola. Funny how we used to drink it thinking it was an invention of the nice folks at Sobraga.
On participation: It is sad that the ruling PDG has decided to choose its candidate (i.e., most likely our next leader) through a closed-door process that involves less than 20 people.
Thanks for sharing.

Oddly enough, Michael Jackson's death and memorial today stir a Gabon PCV memory for me. Arriving in Bitam in late 1980, I found that MJs music preceeded me, but some explanation was needed. One high school student asked me "What is 'Off the wall'?". "What does it mean?".
I was actually more of a ZZ Top, Kansas, etc. fan. I had to listen to the lyrics to learn the meaning of "Off The Wall" myself.
It means "participate" . Don't stand against the wall watching others dance. Get out there and do it yourself.
I hope that student is participating in some important affairs. He went off to Libreville the next year and I lost track of him. I wrack my brain to remember his name and come up with nothing.
Don't forget to participate today and every day. It's not just for the young idealists we once were.
