Toyota: Document This!
On Wednesday, November 2, nearly half the PBS affiliates in California will air "Global Warming: the Signs and the Science," a new documentary underwritten by Toyota. While the documentary exposes the "grave consequences of a changing climate," Toyota itself remains part of a lawsuit against California's law to reduce global warming pollution from vehicles. If Toyota and its allies win in court, they will block this groundbreaking law in our state and nine others--nearly a third of the US car market. Please write to Toyota's North American CEO, Jim Press, and tell him that documentaries on global warming are nothing more than greenwashing if Toyota remains part of this anti-environmental, anti-consumer lawsuit.

Dear Mr. Press,
I'm writing to challenge you to end Toyota's inconsistency regarding global warming. Your company makes the Prius--one of the greenest hybrids on the market, pays for global warming education such as the documentary, "Global Warming: the Signs and the Science," and runs ad campaigns with themes such as "Emissions Blow." However, you are simultaneously suing my state, and thus me, to stop one of the most effective solutions to global warming. I'm asking you to immediately drop out of the lawsuit to block California's global warming standard for vehicles.
Toyota has the engineering know-how to produce clean cars, but a few hybrids in your fleet are not enough. If you want my business in the future, stop using your lawyers to sue us and start using your engineers to build the cleaner cars we all want.

a.. The California standard would require automakers to reduce global warming pollution roughly 30 percent by 2016, an important step toward the 80-90 percent reductions scientists say we need in order to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of global warming.
b.. On October 21, 2005 Toyota and the other automaker parties in the lawsuit against the people of California won their first motion, defeating California Attorney General Lockyer's attempt to have the case thrown out.
c.. Although Toyota does make the greenest hybrid on the market (the Prius), it has not employed its engineers to use existing technology to clean up the rest of its cars and trucks. More...
