In the mid-1800's, Transcendentalist American poet, essayist, and preacher Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote a hauntingly penetrating poem on the subject of human stewardship of the Earth that still bears reading. He lets the Earth give its own opinion of the human spirit/animal in a voice that strangely anticipates the Wessex poet Thomas Hardy. I will not gloss the text or attempt to "take sides." Here is the poem, "Hamatreya": http://www.americanpoems.com/poets/emerson/hamatreya.shtml Bob Monie
