I Am thrilled that a list about Masanobu Fukuoka 's work got establish .For how long and how many peoples ?
Can we see archives ?
I would like to start to introduce myself .
My name is jean-claude ,i am french and have been inspired by masanobu's book " the natural way of farming " 11 years ago when i moved to canada where i live . I have been practicing since .
The funniest thing is that when i met this book that winter i had just double digged my new garden ( in fact my first personal garden ) and made raised beds .
But Masanobu's way got me deep because at that time i had been practicing instinctive nutrition for few years and i discovered that Masanobu was talking about the same philosophy that is behind this way of eating , i had the experience at a different level of what he is talking about .
Instinctive nutrition is based on eating only undenatured foods in the state as one will found them in nature without mixing transforming cooking ,juicing seasonning etc.. one food at a time chosen by sense of smell .
the idea of "you can't do better than Nature "is fully expressed here so the no till just resonated for me .
I had heard about instinctive eating at age 17 but went only into practice when i was 30 despite i was convinced right away .
I never heard of this crazy japanese farmer before so when i read the book i didn't hesitate and went in practice right away and fully .( i was not going to waste years that time )
So first thing i did on those newlly raised bed was to plant clover in the pathway and the side of the beds ....this garden lasted one year and i moved to a 30 acres property that i took care for 5 years .( this 1rst garden , as soon the new renter got in , destroyed all my work and tilled everything )
the deal for this new property was to establish an orchard for the owner (with who i had a great relationship ) for her son to be able to come back living on this island . She build a cabine so we could live there and the son will have built a house and we could lived there for a very long term .( it is 15 acres flat meadow with deep soil and high water table and 15 acres slopped wood on the north face of the mountain
So i started to plant long term things first ( nuts then fruits trees, then berries etc,,). My plan was to establish the type of orchard That masanobu established . Because of my diet where grains are absent so i was not too inspired by his rice field .)
I worked mostly with perennials but had also some grains and vegetables , i got chickens etc...
5 years later when fruits were starting to produce ,my landlady died suddenlly and the land was put for sale by the son ( i discovered then the son didn't want this land he wanted the money )
5 years of full time planting of hundreds of trees and bushes that i resorted myself to dig out( everything was not too big) .( retrospectivelly i should had dig out more ...)
All plants were started from cuttings or layering or seedlings or recycled from ditches etc... i din't buy any ( my land land bought the few trees she wanted to have established ) i started on a flat meadow and resorted to mulching or potato growing on sod and mulched to open the ground to new annuals plants ( i used the scythe a lot ).
so i moved to the new place that i presently work with for the 5th season now .very different setting .
5 acres of fir forest with very thick underbrush of salal berries , ocean spray and sword ferns with many rock bluffs interspaced by some alder bottom ( the lnad when i came in was untouched by the previous owner and was a 2nd growth forest of many decades . the bushes are so thick that it is impenetrable and some parts of the land have still not been walk thru yet .
so very little sun apart the rocky bluffs where no trees are growing ( apart bonzai).
My vegetable garden have been established on one of those rocks .i planted fig trees right on the rock and mulched around over the roots and recovered of some earth .on top i sowed greens to start the process of building up the biomass. Those beds are now at every season mulched with more material coming from the outside then recovered with a layer of new earth to sow new seeds once the harvest is done .That way those beds are becoming with very thin earth very fertile . I also sow outside the beds , directly on the mossy rock , vegetables and produce amazingly beautifull plants considering their roots have only the thickness of the moss to feed on ( no earth ).
the rest of the land support 2 goats and 12 pigeons and is planted with nuts , fruits and berries . i am planning to have chickens and ducks also .
I am for sure overwhelmed by the growth of the alders that i thin slowlly overtime to keep the forest environment, waiting for the fruit and nut trees to replace them . Because of that competition the trees are growing slowlly but i think it is for the best .
berries are planted everywhere and am observing where they prefer to establish .
About Natural way of farming , i have been presenting it , mostly in primitive skills gathering , for many years to many peoples .
I have seen beautifull ex of natural farms in kerala (India ) . one especially that is a communauty that do an excellent work .few years ago i went there for very different purpose and ended up on a tour of natural farms . I was amazed to enconter this movement when i thought i was alone on that planet practicing this approach .I have been carried away for 2 months by this network of very dedicated peoples from place to place and most amazing was , i encontered Masanobu fukuoka himself the last 2 days of my trip .
I arrived a morning in Bombay to get my plane to France the next day .I phoned the book store that carry his books That i wanted to bring back and had ordered and got told that Masanobu just arrived unannounced and was going to speak to few journalists that afternoon .
I got invited to join , listen to what he had to say to indian peoples before going back to japan . He was in Somalia and was going home whwn at the last minute change his plane to stop for 2 days in Bombay . It just happens we arrived the same day .
he was proposing us to answer our questions the next day where he was staying . My plane was leaving early in the morning and was so disapointed i could not stay . But when i phoned Air India to confirm , they told me that the plane was cancelled because of a strike and was going to leave the next day only .
So i got to be there with masanobu a full day eating at the same table ....
To me that was so much a confirmation that the path against the crowd i took was supported somewhere .
When doubt arise in my mind i can allways goes back to that experience that there is something way beyond my thiking that is worth tapping into .
And in that practice i have been challenged a lot and i have been scared also of failure a lot , But there is allways a tiny spark in me that shine with confidence .
Natural way farming is for real !
hope to read you all soon , I hope i am not talking to the wall .
