Dear Larry...I really don't know what to say...it is strange....infact
suddenly everything seems so strange...and so incomprehensible...
i am absolutely unable to write or say anything, but just wanted to
cross this silence to be with you in this moment....
      warmly,
Radhika (I am Rishi's, who joined this group recently, wife)

It's strange how connected you can get to someone you've never met
in person. Not just mentally, but in the heart. Over the last few
months I was so very fortunate to connect with Emilia. It started
with a few offlist emails. Mostly about gardening and the website.
It grew into an almost daily exchange that included talk of family,
our coincidentally sorta misspent youths, and comments on the world,
both general and specific. We had fun playing a multilingual game
with each email. With her command of French, Spanish, Italian and
German she was always ahead, but I was able to hold on with my
      Indonesian,
Cebuano, border Mexican, high school French, idiomatic 'merican,
and furious thumbing through my language dictionaries. I'm sure
any of the posts would have given a real linguist a nightmare, but
it gave us a lot of laughs and it was a great way to start the day
(because of the time differences between us her mail hit my inbox
very early in the morning and mine was usually waiting for her when
she got up the next day).

She reviewed almost everything I posted on the Fukuoka site and also
in the natural gardening section of my website. That process gave
me a deeper insight into natural gardening than any book or article
ever could have because she would comment on things using her personal
experiences and some of the deeper understandings she had reached.
In return I helped her organize and clarify her "manifesto" that
is on the website. From that process I learned that she had been
suffering from writer's block trying to get her book started. Having
been a frequent sufferer of that particular malady, I gave her some
tips on how to jumpstart the writing process. We talked about formats,
style, ebooks vs. printed, chapter organization, and a bunch of
other things that writers usually have to get clear in their mind
before they launch a project. She had finally gotten it sorted in
her mind and was beginning to get it down on paper. From the bits
and pieces she shared with me I have no doubt that it would become
a seminal work. There was just so much breadth and depth of
      understanding
being expressed so simply and powerfully. She was just starting to
make some real progress and then the emails stopped. That was last
      week.

One of the ugly realities that I am constantly reminded of in my
work is the continual loss of unrecorded wisdom and experience that
comes with death. Sometimes the loss is only personal and affects
maybe the immediate family and friends. Sometimes the loss is much
greater. In Emilia's case, even though most of the world has never
heard of her it has lost something important. It lost much of the
understanding she was beginning to record. We have what she has already
written, but we will never have her Magnum Opus, her "great work",
the synthesis of all that she has learned put forth in a clear and
mature explanation of how to help even the poorest of soils give
forth abundant life and nourishment in a truly sustainable, ever
      improving way.

I don't weep for my friend. I believe she is simply, if prematurely,
moving on to the next life and hope that she will find in it all
that she needs and deserves. But I weep for her absence in my life.
For the absence of her charm, her wit, her sharing, her wisdom and
her light. And for the emptiness that will be there for the years
I was looking forward to knowing her. And maybe in the quiet hours
of the early morning from time to time I'll hum this song and think
of her, of what she has given me, and of what else might have been.

      Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
You're only dancing on this earth for a short while
And though your dreams may toss and turn you now
They will vanish away like your daddy's best jeans
Denim Blue fading up to the sky
And though you want him to last forever
      You know he never will
(You know he never will )
And the patches make the goodbye harder still

      Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
There'll never be a better chance to change your mind
And if you want this world to see a better day
Will you carry the words of love with you
Will you ride the great white bird into heaven
And though you want to last forever
      You know you never will
(You know you never will )
And the goodbye makes the journey harder still

      Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
You're only dancing on this earth for a short while
      Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
      ---Cat Stevens "Oh Very Young"

      Goodbye Friend, and Thank you.
