I think it depends on the fertility of the soil, if the soil is very fertile and enough nutrients
for the fruit trees and legume, then there may not be a competition. But once the soil is
fertile still if the weeds grow and competes with crop for sunlight, crops gets affected.
Earlier I had seen when I deweeded one portion of the paddy field, it came out well there.
