Giant deer statue planned to draw I-80 motorists to Clearfield

CLEARFIELD, Pa. - Tourism officials have approved of a plan to build a giant
deer statue along Interstate 80 to draw tourists to Clearfield.
The 85-foot-high deer is part of engineer Richard Hughes' plans for a new
travel and tourism center at an industrial park near the interstate.
Hughes hasn't estimated the cost of the deer, let alone the new tourism
center, but he told the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority
that he believes most or all of the project could be funded by government
grants or private donations.
The tourism board voted Wednesday to approve the idea, which must also pass
muster with the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and
other state regulators before the group seeks money for the project.
