SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) - An Ohio man found dead near Silverton apparently
bled to death after piercing a major artery in his leg with an arrow
while tracking an elk, authorities said.

James Bender, 36, of Union Town, Ohio, was found dead by a search and
rescue team on Monday. San Juan County sheriff's deputy John Jacobs
said Bender had an arrow loaded in his bow while walking, and may have
tripped or slipped. The arrow severed his femoral artery and he passed
out from the blood loss, sheriff's spokeswoman Melody Skinner said. She
said he had loosened his belt as if he planned to use it as a
      tourniquet.

''It's a typical bowhunting injury,'' Jacobs said.

Bender, believed to have died Sept. 4, died from severe blood loss,
coroner Kristina Maxfield said. Bender's friends notified authorities
Friday when he didn't return as scheduled.
