Group Description

Freebirth is the preferred term for what is also known as planned "unassisted" or "unattended" birth.

Although families who chose this option are not attended or assisted by a recognized primary health care professional (e.g. physician, RM or RN) their births are, of course, attended by the birthing woman herself, most often her partner, possibly the older sibling(s) of the baby, other family members, friends, a labour support person or traditional birth attendant (TBA). Regardless of who is or is not there, no one acts in the role of the expert except the birthing woman, and the birth is always assisted in that the woman, her baby and a greater life force energy all work together through the process of labour to make the birth happen!

Freebirth is not illegal, and as friends of freebirth we see that birth is an inherently safe and normal physiological process; we respect the right of birthing women to chose their caregivers (if any) in pregnancy, labour and birth, as well as the environment in which they give birth.

The Friends of Freebirth Foundation of Alberta (FoFF) exists to provide a supportive community of peers who: support the freebirth option, have experienced freebirth, are planning to freebirth or exploring the freebirth option, and wish to share our collective wisdom and resources to help create a path toward birth that is free of the obstacles, fear, and interference so often found in our culture.

Medicalization of pregnancy and childbirth has reduced the capacity of women and their communities to experience childbirth as they have done over the ages. All women know how to give birth - let's reclaim our power and share our wisdom!

FOFF offers: a like-minded community, an on-line discussion group, monthly potluck lunch gatherings, resource sharing and informal freebirth preparation. We are a volunteer, non-profit society and gratefully accept donations of all kinds.
