      Surah Al-Baqarah: 16 to 20

      Bismilla_hir rahma_nir rahim

      16. Ula_'ikal lazinasy tarawuddala_lata bil huda_, fama_ rabihat
      tiaja_ratuhum wama_ ka_nu_ muhtadin(a).
      16. These are they who have bartered guidance for error: but their traffic is profitless and they have lost true direction.

      16. Ula_'ikal lazina = these or those are the ones
      asy tarawu = who bought
      uddala_lata = the astraying
      b+ il+ huda_, = with the guidance
      fa = so, therefore
      ma_ rabihat = not gained, not made profit
      tiaja_ratuhum = their trade or deal or business
      wama_ ka_nu_ = and they were not
      muhtadin(a). = guided ones


      17. Masaluhum kamasalil lazis tauqadana_ra_(n), falamma_ ada_'at ma_
      haulahu_ zahaballa_hu binu_rihim wa tarakahum fi zuluma_til la_
      yubsiru_n(a).
      17. Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a fire; when it lighted all around him Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness so they could not see.

      17. Masaluhum = their example(is)
      kamasali = like the example of
      al lazi = the one, that
      as tauqada = who lighted up,set burning
      na_ra_(n), = fire
      fa+lamma_ = so when
      ada_'at = it lighted
      ma_ haulahu_ = his ( hu_) surrounding
      zahaballa_hu bi = Allah took away
      nu_ri (light) him = their light
      wa taraka = and He left
      hum = them
      fi (in) zuluma_til = in darkness
      la_(not) yubsiru_n(a). = they do not see


      18. Summum bukmun 'umyun fahum la_ yarji'u_n(a).
      18. Deaf dumb and blind they will not return (to the path).

      18. Summum = they are deaf
      bukmun = they are dumb
      'umyun = they are blind
      fa ( so) hum = so they
      la_ ( not) yarji'u_n(a). = do not return

      19. Au kasayyibim minas sama_'i fihi zuluma_tuw wara'duw wabarq(un),
      yaj'alu_na asa_bi'ahum fi a_za_nihim minas sawa_'iqi hazaral ma_t(i),
      walla_hu muhitum bil ka_firin(a).
      19. Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky; in it are zones of darkness and thunder and lightning they press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith!

      kasayyibim = pouring out ( heavy rain)
      min (from) as sama_'i = from the sky
      fihi = in it
      zuluma_tuw = darkness
      wara'duw = and thunder
      wabarq(un), = and lightning
      yaj'alu_na = they put
      asa_bi'a ( fingers) hum = their fingers
      fi (in) a_za_ni (ears) him = in their ears
      min = from
      as sawa_'iqi = the lightning,thunderbolt
      hazara = warned, made cautious of
      al ma_t(i), = the death
      walla_hu = and Allah
      muhitum bi = is encircling, is encompassing
      al ka_firin(a). = the disbelievers

      20. Yaka_dul barqu yakhtafu absa_rahum, kullama_ ada_'a lahum masyau
      fih(i), wa iza_ azlama 'alaihim qa_mu_, wa lau sya_'alla_hu lazahaba
      bisam'ihim wa absa_rihim, innalla_ha 'ala_ kulli syai'in qadir(un).
      20. The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (helps) them they walk therein and when the darkness grows on them they stand still. And if Allah willed He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for Allah hath power over all things.

      20. Yaka_du = it is nearly (that)
      al barqu = the lightning
      yakhtafu = snatches or takes away
      absa_rahum, = their eyesight
      kullama_ = when
      ada_'a = it lighted
      lahum = for them
      masyau = they walk
      fih(i), = in it
      wa iza_ = and when
      azlama = it darkened
      'alaihim = on them
      qa_mu_, = they stand
      wa lau = and if
      sya_' = wished
      alla_hu = Allah
      lazahaba = He would have taken away
      bisam'ihim = their hearing
      wa absa_rihim, = and their eyesight
      innalla_ha = indeed Allah
      'ala_ = on
      kulli = all
      syai'in = things
      qadir(un). = (has the power) Almighty,Allpowerful.
