- May 10, 2010I think the dialogue in The Russian House and Killing Time has been excellent. I like Sam & Adam together (much better than Sam & Andrew, IMO, although I did like Andrew's scenes with his father), and I hope Milner will be back for the third episode.
I have to go back and watch the last series because I don't remember them very well, but I don't think these past two episodes are quite up to the standard set by the early FW episodes.
Last night I was literally looking at the clock waiting for the crime to be committed (more than 40 minutes into the episode), and then once the body was discovered I immediately correctly guessed the murderer just based on how much time had been spent introducing the characters and my own reckoning of who was too likely a suspect to actually be the murderer. The sentiments expressed by the characters seemed very accurate though, so it's almost like one person came up with the plot, and another more thoughtful, reflective person did the dialogue.
I also kind of wonder about the historical accuracy. I know Horowitz does a lot of research and tends to base the stories on actual events rather than making things up, but the Killing Time story didn't quite jibe for me. US forces weren't integrated until '48 (the story was taking place prior to '48, right?), and while there were some African-Americans in otherwise white units, it was rare. And if racial tensions were so high the Army wanted to segregate off-post bars, the post must have been hosting an all-black unit, and yet we saw a grand total of 4 African-American soldiers.
Oh, and the American accents are all wrong.
I know I'm quibbling, but the early episodes are SO good, these are a little bit of a disappointment. Here's hoping they've been saving the best for last!
PS - I just looked up the credits for Killing Time, and it was NOT written by Horowitz, but by someone named David Kane.

I thought both of these (The Russian House and Killing Time) were better than the last two in the previous series. I had the impression from the last series, that the editor of the film was putting the story together. But these latest two -- I think -- show more acting and have better dialog. I missed Milner in Killing Time. Sam's new love interest is a good match for her.
Looking forward to the 3rd in the series.

Enjoyed "The Russian" house. Especially the relationship between Sam, Milner and Foyle. I especially enjoyed how it changed. I did not like "killing time " as much. Although a weak Foyle's War is better then all those CSI clones. I've heard the third installment is the best and the "Wall Street Journal" commented that this is not the last of the series. So Cool.
