      Same error that appears on fotonotes.org:

      Line 224
      Charcter 2
      Error: 'parentNode' is null or not an object

      In IE6 it works fine, it is just anoying because some users have
      activated error debugging an don't know how to deactivate it.

      In my IE7 Beta I use for testing Fotonotes don't show and error
      message gives no details. I'm just supposing it might be the same
      error. Maybe it will work later on with a final version.

      I don't really know much JavaScript so I didn't get into looking for
      these errors..

      --- Changing to doubt in PHP. I tried to use PEAR DB instead of your
      Database abstraction. But when I tried to include DB.php or on any
      other include() or require() I added in fotonotes.php the application
      failded to work. Why?

        Ok, I think I have a release of fnclient-0.6.0.

        Testing appreciated! Also, see what's planned for version 0.7.0 --
        and how I need help with it!

        URL:
        http://fotonotes.net
        http://fotonotes.net/downloads/fnclient/fnclient-0.6.0.tar

        SVN:
        release: https://wush.net/svn/fotonotes/fnclient/releases/0.6.0/
        branch: https://wush.net/svn/fotonotes/fnclient/branches/0.6.0/
        main development: https://wush.net/svn/fotonotes/fnclient/trunk/

        What's New:
        - Replaces .png graphics that looked bad in IE with transparent .gifs
        - Various layout issues improved, especially on IE.
        - Various javascript errors should be fixed, including IE
        - The common error of JPEG files not being writable now gives
        specific error stating that
        - Routine that finds images on page to make annotate-able now
        gracefully handles <img> tags inside <a href> tags and moves the link
        to after the image when DOM is updated.
        - This version works nicely with zenphoto

        What's Next (e.g., version 0.7.0):
        In July and August I am embarking on an even more significant upgrade:
        - Add an RSS feed and API interface to access the annotations
        - Store annotations in database fully working
        - Possible changes to XML spec to make more compatible with MemoryMiner
        - (Hopefully) build plugin code to read annotations from flickr
        - user identity code back in
        - Adding other shapes, grease pencil to annotations using canvas tag
        - Tagging annotations

          Joachim,

          I just posted a new release of fnclient. Can you please give it a try
          in IE and
          see if I fixed that javascript bug?

          As to the PEAR DB, can you describe more exactly what you replaced?
          It could be fotonotes.php is just dying b/c it is still looking to
          include certain
          functions?

          I've never gone through code carefully to see if the database calls are
          sufficiently abstracted such that another abstraction works. There could
          also be name-space collisions?

              I uploaded everything, changed the class of the image. And it does say
              "loading fotonotes" (in my right upper corner), but nothing really

                There are a few possibilities. Is it on a web server where I can see it?
                If you turn on debugging (see below) and I can take look.

                Debugging Tools
                --------------------------
                1) Open fnclientlib/js/fnclient.js, scroll down to about line 53, and
                set fnDebugMode to "true":
                var fnDebugMode = true; // Set to true to show XML sent/received.

                This will show a series of alerts messages showing the communication
                with the server.
                Note: these messages seem to look best in Safari, where you can copy
                and paste them.

                2) Open fotonotes.php and also scroll down to around line 53 and you
                can adjust the
                level of debug announcements the fotonotes.php script echos. (These
                are messages
                that show up in the alerts.) If you have trouble reading the
                messages, go through the
                code and adjust what produces an error messages.

                Common Problems
                ----------------------------
                1. Paths are incorrect. fnclientlib/js/fnclient.js needs to know
                where to contact fotonotes.php script.
                2. File permissions on the images are incorrect. The files must be
                writable by PHP/web server
                3. PHP needs to have the GD extensions 2.0 or higher installed.
                You can check this by creating a simple PHP script with the single
                function call phpinfo() and
                get a whole display of images.

                My Guess
                -------------
                If the javascript is running, but nothing happens, my guess is either
                (a) fnclient.js is not finding
                the proper script or (b) something basic is wrong with PHP. PHP dies
                without an error and your
                current php.ini file is set to show no errors.

                    Hi Greg,

                    I'm on vacation in Germany so it took me some days to look up the new
                    version. Looks great.

                    The JavaScript Error I described has disappeared in IE6. I haven't
                    done any testing with IE7 yet.

                    Unfortunally there is a new JavaScript Error on POST in my
                    installation in IE. I'm not sure what I did wrong. In Firefox
                    everything works fine but in IE the form doesn't disappear after
                    clicking 'ok' although information is saved perfectly(on reload the
                    last annotation added is shown). JavaScript Runtime error appears.

                    You can see it in:
                    http://www.deutschlern.net/fn60/docs/test_fnclient.php
                    debugging is put on.(is there any way to see alerts which are larger
                    than my screen?)
                    I tried your installation on fotonotes.net with IE and everything
                    worked fine. My installation in firefox works fine as well, so I'm not
                    sure what is going wrong.

                    An important note for anybody using fotonotes in another language than
                    English. I tried using annotations with german characters as ä ö ü or
                    letters with accents like á. It's impossible to save annotations
                    containing such characters. I resolved this problem using utf8 charset
                    and adding utf8_encode() in

                    library.fnsave.inc.php

                    function writeJPEGHeaders($fn_image, $fn_annotation)

                    $fn_image->param['annotationXMLBlock'] = $header .
                    $fn_annotation->param['src_xml'] . "</feed>";
                    } else {
                    // xml block already exists, I need to append new entry
                    $fn_image->param['annotationXMLBlock'] =
                    preg_replace("#</feed>#Umsi",$fn_annotation->param['src_xml']."</feed>",
                    $fn_image->param['annotationXMLBlock']);
                    }

                    TO

                    fn_image->param['annotationXMLBlock'] = $header .
                    utf8_encode($fn_annotation->param['src_xml']) . "</feed>";
                    } else {
                    // xml block already exists, I need to append new entry
                    $fn_image->param['annotationXMLBlock'] =
                    preg_replace("#</feed>#Umsi",utf8_encode($fn_annotation->param['src_xml'])."</feed>"),
                    $fn_image->param['annotationXMLBlock']);
                    }

                      I have not yet tested/debugged the pretty URLs. I'll look into that
                      next.

                      1. Download fnclient-0.6.0.tar
                      2. Untar fnclient-0.6.0.tar
                      3. Copy fnclient-0.6.0 folder into your zenphoto directory.
                      (Optional: rename fnclient-0.6.0 to fnclient)
                      4. Select a theme which you want to use fotonotes and do the
                      following to the zenphoto/themes/selectedtheme/image.php
                      4a. Modify image.php header to include fnclient.js and fnclient.css
                      <!-- fotonotes modfication -->
                      <script type="text/javascript" src="fnclient/fnclientlib/js/
                      fnclient.js"></script>
                      <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="fnclient/
                      fnclientlib/styles/fnclient.css" />
                      <!-- /fotonotes modification -->

                      4b. Modify image.php body where printDefaultSizedImage(getImageTitle
                      ()) exists.
                      replace:
                      <a href="<?=getFullImageURL();?>" title="<?=getImageTitle();?>"><?
                      php printDefaultSizedImage(getImageTitle()); ?></a>

                      with:
                      <a href="<?=getFullImageURL();?>" title="<?=getImageTitle();?>">
                      <!-- fotonotes modification -->
                      <!-- passing fn-image as class and url for id of <img>
                      tag -->
                      <?php printDefaultSizedImage(getImageTitle(),"fn-
                      image",getFullImageURL()); ?>
                      <!-- /fotonotes modification -->
                      </a>

                      4c. Note the additional parameters passed into
                      printDefaultSizedImage function.

                      5. Open fnclient-0.6.0/fnclientlib/js/fnclient.js and adjust all
                      necessary parameters.
                      5a. Adjust paths for your install. For example, set

                      5b. Set var imageFileSrc = "id"; (This makes sure sure the full
                      image url is passed.)

                      Common Problems
                      ---------------------------
                      - The file paths in javascript MUST BE CORRECT
                      - Since annotations are stored in jpeg headers, images must be read/
                      writable by PHP.
                      - I have seen time-outs on multi-megabyte images. php.ini defines a
                      timeout of 30 seconds by default
                      Look for this line:
                      max_execution_time = 30 ; Maximum execution time of each script,
                      in seconds
                      - Turn on debugging in fnclient-0.6.0/fnclientlib/js/fnclient.js to
                      see what is broken.

                          Joqel,

                          Glad to hear we fixed that bug. I have noticed on IE that sometimes
                          it takes to clicks on OK to submit the annotation form. Thanks for the
                          link. I'll test it when I get next to a PC again.

                          With respect to the long alert messages. If you are on Safari,
                          you can actually Command-A and select all of the alert and paste
                          it into a text editor to read.

                          If you are not on Safari, you can set the DEBUG level in
                          fotonotes.php lower and/or
                          change the level at which messages appear to minimize the number
                          of messages. In fotonotes.php, see:

                          /* DEBUG
                          --------------------------------------------- */
                          define("DEBUGLEVEL", 4);

                          Clearly, I could use some help with internationalizing the code! Help
                          welcome!

                          Greg

                            I should also put out some instructions on how to protect your
                            annotations. There
                            is a basic global password architecture in place that you can set in
                            the fn_config.php file.

                                    Joachim,

                                    This is pretty interesting stuff. I was able to see an annotated
                                    image here:

                                    <http://deutschlern.net/fnclient.php?
                                    module=curs&action=fnSet&fn_itemId=aa21d1dd86b1750ee1d8e2916f5e6644>

                                    But I couldn't figure out how to change languages. Does that feature
                                    exist?

                                    Can you say more about the foto-dictionary idea? Are you thinking,
                                    like, a visual dictionary of things using photos and annotations?
                                    That could be very cool...

                                      No. I prepared the ability to show translations in the backend. Functions to save and retrieve annotations are already changed to work with an additional language id (passed by session variable)- Interface to translate existing annotations to another language is also prepared. After my vacations I'll finish the first multi-language prototypes.I'll post you a link when there is something visible.

                                      Can you say more about the foto-dictionary idea? Are you thinking,

                                      That's it. There will be thematic fotosets with fotos and annotations.I'll add some search-function. Another idea (I saw in your code you also thought about it) is to crop annotated areas...
                                      I'll keep you informed.

                                      (It's really exciting to see stuff like this!)

                                      It's exiting to find apps like fotonotes to work with!  Thank  you for your work-
