At the onset of World War II, the same moment that Vladek Spiegelman s story begins, progressive educational philosophers John Dewey and Louise Rosenblatt
Message 1 of 3969 , Sep 1, 2001
"At the onset of World War II, the same moment
that Vladek Spiegelman's story begins, progressive
educational philosophers John Dewey and Louise Rosenblatt
wrote optimistically of their faith in the 'social
imagination,' developed in part through literature which allows
the reader the possibility of identifying with the
'other' and thereby developing modes of moral
understanding which were thought to build democracy." (THE

article "O komiksie 'Maus'" written by Wojciech Orliski
["Midrasz." Nr 5 (49) maj 2001, s. 18] and enjoying the
fragment of that comic book (Therein, pp. 41-54 --
http://www.midrasz.home.pl/2001/maj/spis.html) recall this sentence published in 1994 in the
journal PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION. Though Art Spiegelman
describes his father Vladek with a pinch of
"anti-Semitism," it doesn't cause failure of the above too
optimistic faith just in this case. The main cause is that
too many people prefer after they've read a book or
watched a movie to feel that everything is just fine than
to feel that there is much difficult work that lies
ahead. (THE GAZE OF MULTICULTURALISM by William L.

testimonial books and movies.
However, today's books and
movies often are created with quite another aim. Tragic
vicissitudes of heroes' and heroines' lives intend to rouse
the only one readers' or audience' feeling--the
feeling of pleasure in life, no matter how poor the life
is but life and not death: "Don't have any dream to
change anything for better! Enjoy what you have because
many people don't have even that! Many wealthy people
are very unhappy, some of them are seriously ill and
some of them are murdered! Etc., etc." Such books and
movies don't elicit any feeling of shame, or guilt, or
responsibility from readers and audience and don't encourage
them to change their future behavior and attitudes and
to better the world. Can you contemn such books and
movies?

Tad

Witam,

robi. W dodatku jako podatnicy stracimy miliony (w skali kraju):
