May I suggest that you take a look at my web site before spending too much
mental energy thinking about "quantum computation"? Hopefully, there will
be a few spin-offs here and there from the process of trying to make this
work, but the fact is that the theory behind it is false!

Quantum computation works only if quantum entanglement really happens. I
have been studying the experimental evidence for this for some years now,
and I am absolutely certain that it is being routinely misinterpreted. Many
published papers now state that results have been seen that cannot be
explained by any local realist model, implying that this proves quantum
entanglement and "nonlocal" influences are facts that we have to live with.
The tests they use are badly biased, UNLESS quantum theory is right! If you
happen to suspect that QT could be wrong, then you can dismiss the tests:
      they are not valid.

One critical part of QT that is involved here is the assumption that light
consists of photons. Photons, they think, must exit by one channel OR the
other at a two-channel polariser. But real light is a wave, and can be
split into waves that exit by BOTH channels. The output waves have lower
amplitude than the input ones (lower classical e/m amplitude, that is) but
there is no physical reason why both should not exist.

Do look at my web site <http://www.aber.ac.uk/~cat> for more. As I
understand it, anyone who accepts a purely wave model of light can forget
about quantum entanglement. They can therefore be sure that quantum
computing as such is impossible. I know they claim to have demonstrated it
on a limited scale, but the demonstrations are VERY obscure, as well as very
useless! Sometimes I wonder if they are just pulling our legs!

I printed out one of the papers you refer to earlier today: Jones J.A. NMR
Quantum Computation: a Critical Evaluation. Mon, 28 Feb 2000 11:26:47 GMT,
http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/quant-ph/0002085 . I haven't had time to look at it
yet, but I hoped from the abstract to find some healthy scepticism.
