Subject: [LAR] Press conference at Zanja Madre Park Thursday 9am

      Hello River folks ---

We're having a press conference this Thursday. FoLAR is joining
with the LA Couty Bicycle Coalition, North East Trees, Sierra Club and
others, to call for $8 million from the MTA for bike and pedestrian projects
      - showcasing the LA River Bikeway as a prime example of a project that
should be funded. The text of our press release is below.

      We need:

      1. People: Anyone interested should come on down and show your
      support!

      2. Tandem Bicycles: We have a few lined up, but need more. If
anyone has a tandem that the LACBC can borrow for a day, please let us know
asap! If you know of a friend with a tandem, call them or let us know their
      phone number and we'll call.

      Thanks!

      Joe

      JUNE 28 1999 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COUNTY BIKE COALITION DEMANDS M.T.A. KEEP
L.A. RIVER BIKEWAY ROLLING INTO DOWNTOWN

A coalition of environmental organizations is demanding that the MTA
continue funding the Los Angeles River commuter bikeway into downtown Los
Angeles, and increase bikeway funding county-wide. The group, which
includes Friends of the Los Angeles River, North East Trees, the Sierra
Club, and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, is protesting a
preliminary decision by the MTA staff to reject its own Technical Advisory
Committee's recommendation to fund the design of Phase 3 of the River
Bikeway which would extend the commuter route from Zanja Madre Park in
Elysian Valley into Union Station. When Phase 3 is complete, it will
connect the San Fernando Valley, Northeast L.A., Glendale, and Burbank with
      downtown L.A.

Thursday July 1st at 9:00 A.M. the River Bikeway Coalition will hold
a press conference at Zanja Madre Park in Elysian Valley - located one block
south of the intersection of Riverside Drive and Barclay Street in Elysian
Valley just north of downtown L.A. - featuring an escorted tour of the
proposed bikeway route. A limited number of bikes (including tandems) will
be made available for reporters and camera crews. To reserve your ride, and
for more press conference information, contact Ron Milan, Executive
Director, L.A. County Bicycle Coalition 213-629-2142,
rpm@..., or Joe Linton, Board Secretary, at 323-669-2359,
      jlinton@....
