Group Description

Welcome to Food Not Lawns, Cleveland.
The Food Not Lawns movement, inspired by Heather C. Flores' book of the same name, is dedicated to replacing our lawns with edible gardens in the name of self-sufficiency and community resilience. We believe that growing our own food is personally empowering, creates thriving human and animal habitat, radically alters our relationship to the land where we live, reduces our carbon footprint, increases our health and well-being and creates community resilience, one yard at a time. We are interested in: permaculture , local and organic food, food security systems, including growing and saving seed, rainwater catchment, zero waste and reuse.

We encourage and facilitate lawn conversions, i.e replacing the monoculture of lawn with diverse, ecologically designed planting that sustains wildlife and ourselves. We use the sheet mulch method (no till), as described by Heather Flores,to build soil using primarily recycled materials. We also encourage growing and sharing surplus, sharing tools, seeds, plants and other resources, updating zoning laws in reference to food security, recycle and reuse, volunteering our time, energy and expertise to each other.

We hold monthly meetings to share knowledge and skills on a wide variety of topics. We teach seed saving and maintain a collection to lend and grow. We have annual seed and plant swaps and other social events, movies and potlucks as they are organized. At least once per season, we have a sheet mulch demonstration and lawn conversion. Members are encouraged to contribute positive solutions, ideas, skills and time.

We extol the potency of incremental change - everyone can do something.

Come to some of our activities, and join us in recreating our yards and communities.
