FW: appeal for the victims of super-typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in the PhilsDear Colleagues: I know you have been following the terrible destruction visited upon the Philippines by the recent typhoon, thanks to climate change.
There are many appeals for support circulating and I hope they are all successful, but I wanted to bring to your attention the email I just received from colleagues in the grassroots OHS movement in the Philippines which our Network has worked with the in the past.
It seems that in many disasters very little of the relief ever reaches the people the donors want to help. In this case, I feel confident that any donations made in response to this appeal will reach the people who need assistance the most.

Greetings! I hope you are well.
You may have seen and heard the reports of the massive destruction here in the Philippines, caused by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on Nov 8. The death toll is estimated at 10,000 and damages in at least 41 areas are placed at billions of pesos. The images of the destruction are mind-boggling. The destruction is being compared to the effects of the 2004 Tsunami in Aceh, Thailand and across the Indian Ocean.
While billions of money from the local and international communities is pouring in, the national government’s response is very ineffective, to say the least. Relief distribution is so slow and supplies have barely reached the beneficiaries. This resulted to chaotic situation in some areas, forcing victims and survivors to "loot" for survival.
In response to the situation, grassroots movement are also conducting relief and rehabilitation drive. Part of this effort is Task Force Obrero. Task Force Obrero began in 2009 as an initiative of non-government institutions, trade unions and advocates for the workers who deliver immediate relief and rehabilitation to workers and their families. MWAP is a member of this initiative.
I am writing to ask if it’s possible to solicit donations from the Maquiladora Health & Safety Support Network for this effort. I am attaching a letter that MWAP is circulating for this donation drive. I hope you can help. Please also distribute this widely to your friends and other networks.
Secretary General, MWAP
