Blood Work - 2002
Cast: Clint Eastwood, Wanda De Jesus, Jeff Daniels, Anjelica Huston,
Paul Rodriguez Director: Clint Eastwood
ScottNY was saying this film wasn't too bad and after watching it,
I have to agree with him. This was not the greatest thriller of
all times but it was still rather entertaining (even though a misguided
person had spoiled the film in advance for me by revealing exactly how
it ended, "The twist" at the very end.) 3/5
The story is quite interesting. Clint Eastwood is playing a cop
looking for a serial killer who likes to leave messages written
on the walls inside victims' homes ... "Catch me, McCaleb !"
and whatnot ...
On the scene of the latest murder, Eastwood notices someone
suspicious in the crowd and within a split second he is involved in
a foot pursuit, but then he suddenly has some major heart problems
midway through the chase and he collapses ... he soon finds out he
needs a heart transplant ASAP or else he'll be a goner.
Fast forward two years and Clint is now retired and enjoying life on
his house-boat, (Jeff Daniels is his wacky neighbor, provides a good deal
of comic relief too !) He has just received a new heart (Anjelica Huston
plays the surgeon lecturing Clint !) . A young woman (Wanda De Jesus)
him down and asks him to solve the murder of her sister.
The twist here is that her murdered sister is the one who donated Clint's
heart so he feels obligated to help of course since she saved his life
before dying ... (This all happens during the first 10 minutes so it's
not really a spoiler !)
Eastwood's investigation was fun to watch and I liked Jeff Daniels as the
neighbor ... but unfortunately Paul Rodriguez was quite annoying as
a hispanic cop who had an AGENDA and didn't want to see Clint back in the
spotlight again ...
one person (Jeff Daniels) was enough comic relief for one thriller ! ;-)
I also didn't care much for the love story as it didn't seem believable
Wanda De Jesus would fall in love with such an old man (She
is around 42 years old and Clint is 72 ... plus he has his
sister's heart inside his chest, so it was a bit PERVERTED even without
the age difference, lol !)
Overall I enjoyed the movie even though there were a few plot holes ...
I have read mixed reviews, from 2/4 to 3.5/4 although I think here
Roger Ebert was exaggerating a bit, it's really not worth 3.5/4,
but it was certainly worth the dollar I paid to rent it !
Austin : "You're very ....... 'SWITCHED ON' ... Baby !"
