I have been looking forward to seeing it for a while. So it was a lovely surprise when I discovered that it was playing at my local theater this weekend.
Girl with a Pearl Earring
the Cast: Colin Firth (Johannes Vermeer): Finally, no sign of a Darcy feature in this character. A good performance. Scarlett Johansson (Griet): Her eyes reveal a lot of her character's inquisitiveness which I think is the best part of her performance in her scenes with no lines. Tom Wilkinson (Van Ruijven): He does so well as this nasty man.
the Plot: Painter Johannes Vermeer treats his young servant, Griet, as his pupil in paint making and as his subject for his paintings. Rumors surround their relationship.
the Cinematography: Two of the creepiest shots in this movie involve basically the same image. One is a widening shot of Scarlett in the pose of the famous painting. The other, at the end, is a widening shot of the actual painting. I thought that was fascinating.
the Costumes: I think this is the first film I have seen with 17th Century Dutch costumes. They were very well done.
Overall Impression: I think it is interesting to see the life of a painter on film and then take a look at the artist's paintings afterward. The darkness of the set, mood, and lighting of the film are very much a reflection of Vermeer's paintings. I think it is a very good costume drama.
Final Score: ***/*****
