I got the cryptic message from Bill and Sue too. Since I'm starting to try
to network our FHC instead of fighting the patrons who try to hide or
destroy the CD's, I suspect I know what they are talking about. It is
however cureous that we are on their mailing list. Pete Combes, Computer

Sorry about the cryptic message before, but I previously sent out several messages
about the problems I was having and assumed the list already knew about them. My
remark about the list being so quiet was because no one responded to my last call
for help over a week ago. (See copy at the end of this message)

Anyway, I set up our FHC network with 5 computers, one Pentium class (Cyrix 686
150+) with WIN98 as the server and 4 each 486's with DOS. I used bits and pieces
of all the papers written by various people and all posted on the FHCTECH page at
the Directors Nest plus some Emails from Rick P. Those papers got me there, but as
some of them, too, were somewhat cryptic, using some network terms that meant
nothing to me a novice network person. I had to explore, experiment by trial &
error, etc. all day, every day for over two weeks to finally figure out how to get
to & configure & "map" network HDs/folders and the DOS Client software on each 486
computer in a way that worked in this network. Today, the system works, but I am
not real sure why. The Win98 server computer cannot find the other computers in
the network but the DOS computers are able to connect to the big hard drive
(Maxtor 40GB) and access the FamilySearch data stored there just fine.

The recommended Promise Ultra66 PCI card in the server, I installed to speed up
the data flow, still does not work and the vendor has not yet responded to my
Emails. I had to connect the big HD to the M/B IDE port to get it up.

So it's not all working yet but the FHC Staff, Patrons & I are real happy with the
            network so far.

Copy of message I sent out on 29 Nov 99:
Have installed all the FS CDs (all 64) on the Maxtor 40GB HD. Works
great with FS on the Server computer. But I still cannot get the network
up. The Network boards came with a diagnostics program on the floppy
disk. Using this the Dos computers will talk to each other but not to
the server or from the server to them. Using WIN98 Network Neighborhood
find function it cannot find any of the DOS computers. When it is trying
to find them the light on the HUB from the server flashes.

Had a local member network expert come in and look at it, but he could
not see anything wrong. But as he said, he is not a DOS network expert
and he was lost just as I am.

The Ultra66 still does not work either. Sent an Email to the Promise
            people, but no answer yet...

Any ideas, I've checked everything, configuration, etc? Followed the
papers by some of you, as far as I could without the connection
            occuring?

Thanks for all your info. I appreciate what you have/are going through.
I've setup a couple of networks before and have absolutely no confidence
that the next one I play with (the FHC project) will be any easier than
either of the others. I guess trained professionals can do it easier, but
they are usually dealing with someone else's budget and finances are not a
              problem.

I may annoy you further as I get into this. Thanks for your response. Hope
you have a happy holiday. - Pete
