OK, so we got a cascaded computer today....

The computer came with a Vista License on the side, but instructions to call the helpline for a license.  The kindly missionary referred me to:

      http://www.emeasupport.org/fhc/software

Where I find a website that not only has an activation script for my non-Windows7 licensed computer, but also a website that has centralized ALL the coolest software that any FHC would want to install and run in their center... There is even a 615MB installer that does the following:
"This program will install automatically all the software marked as preferred on this page, and also standardize users, wallpapers and the login screen. It needs to be executed with the user 'Patron' and administrative rights."
I can't believe, just how much effort goes into stuff at Church headquarters that is NEVER communicated to STS all over the country.... we are left to flounder around doing our own thing, spending countless hours duplicating efforts world-wide.

      FamilySearch MUST do a better.

Since it offers licensed software, that website may not last long.

when I got my cascaded computer it had a message taped to the side that said the OS installed on the computer was Windows 7, if I had a sticker on the side with a license code for Windows 7 to enter it, and if I didn't have one to call into the support line and get one.  I then called into the support line and was directed to this website.

It was the FamilySearch.org Missionary that directed me to that web page.  If it is not the right place to be then there is a problem.  It was around 7am my time and I spoke to someone in Ireland, but that certainly isn't something outside my experience... I routinely call that early so I can do my day job as well.

Whether or not it is official or not isn't really my concern at this point.  I followed the procedure I was given.  If FamilySearch support line isn't doing things right I can't help them because I don't know any better and without information I can't determine whether something is good or bad.  But when I do learn things I try and share.

If this was an effort by European members of the church, I applaud them because this was the best designed and organized site I've seen regarding FHC support or any support for technology related items including SLC.

I checked this site out and it has the official (and new) Family Search symbol on it. It looks great and seems to answer all of the questions I had in converting two computers cascaded from the History department to Family History Center uses. I want to put my five stars next to this statement ".. we are left to flounder around doing our own thing, spending countless hours duplicating efforts world-wide. " A large percentage of the problems we have can be traced to poor communications. I ended up after hours of work, still having to call tech support and spending 20 useless minutes lsitening to the music or trying to convince the missionary who was answering the phone that there wasn't a canned answer some place and I really did need to talk to tech support.

The Yuma AZ FHC center received 10 new pcs with a Windows 7 image on them from Family History. You would not believe all the problems I have had just even getting them set up. I have spent around 50 hours so far. I agree with you!!! They just leave us out on a limb - we have to resolve the problems ourselves. I finally just gave up, and decided to keep documentation on everything I have had to do to send to them. I can't believe the total lack of support from them. By the way, the image was made right around the time that the Sophos program was creating huge problems, and even blocking itself and quarantining the Portal file. That is what was included in the image.
