Re: [fhctech] Donated computer
- Barry,If you are in North America, I suggest that you call 1-866-406-1830 and ask for Family History Center Support. (There are other toll-free numbers for other parts of the world.)On Fri, May 31, 2013 at 6:19 PM, barryzinn66 <barryzinn66@...> wrote:
Patron want to donate computer to our FHC. All our existing computers run XP. This donated machine will be new. What should the specifications be for use in our FHC? Ram, storage, OS etc?
We have three computers in our center two of which are very slow. One is so slow it won't be online for 30 minutes or longer. All three are hardwire hook up not wireless since our wireless connection in the entire building is really slow to impossible to hook into. The FHC is seven rooms away from the firewall with a booster added to the firewall to try to get the signal down to the FHC. Even replacing the boosters hasn't helped with the wireless hook up or slow computer hook up.
The director contacted tech support and was told maybe it was a bandwidth problem then suggested we increase our bandwidth to see if that helps. How would we do that? Our firewall/modem is from before 2009 a Qwest Motorola 2047 according to what I was told , the two computers are a 2005 Dell and a 2006 HP that was donated to us.
Any help would be appreciated.
- I would suggest you replace the DSL modem with a new model. I had the same problem with one of my wards. The DSL modem kept dropping the connection. When I called the ISP, they said they could see the problem in their logs. They sent us a new DSL modem, which worked much better. I also asked them to upgrade the download speed to 6 MB, which only cost $5 more per month.I had to make sure the DSL modem was "provisioned" or configured for the speed we were paying for. When we received the new DSL modem, it was provisioned for 1 MB service, but we were paying for 3 MB service.I had to work closely with my FM office, since they had to add me as one of the people authorized to request changes from the ISP. I am the stake clerk, so I review the bill each month. Normally, the FM pays internet bills. However, Windstream won't allow us to split the telephone bill from the DSL bill, so my stake pays the whole thing.Dana in Council Bluffs
- I suggest you contact the stake technology specialist. The network and the computers both fall under his domain. More so the network since it's likely used by the rest of the building. I know some FHCs have problems getting help from the STS. If that's the case then the director needs to have a little chat with the stake president about responsibilities. Network connections have ceased to be "the FHC network" a few years now.
Yes, speed problems could well be a bad modem. You also could be running out of IP addresses. On Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 7:27 PM, E Marleena Alkire <emalkire@...> wrote:

- By the end of the year, all units should be using a Cisco 881W firewall. I still have a few units using the old Cisco Pix 501 or the Cisco ASA 5505, by my FM promises me he will replace those by the end of 2013.Dana
That's good news. I'll let my director know. Thank you.
