MessageHey Bill, that's funny! I don't have a secured storage in our FHC, so my ghost (I actually use Acronis True Image) images are kept on a 500 Gb Portable USB drive that goes home with me. I had never thought of a patron (or staff member) actually trying to use one of the images, but now that I've heard your story, I'll be sure to not leave any images at the FHC!As a test, I actually tried formating one of my Patron computer's hard drives... I also went in and removed about half the entries in the registry and erased many of the application program files, something that would kill a computer totally in most cases, I deleted all of the icons off the desktop... In each of these tests, Deep Freeze brought the machine back to full original functionality with a simple reboot. Like Bill, the only times I have to visit the FHC is for upgrades or other non-configuration issues (broken printers, broken monitors, network cables unplugged, etc.) I have trained the FHC staff that before they ever call me, they are to try rebooting an errant machine first. It's been months since anyone has had to call me. Patron datafiles (my documents folder) are stored on a 'Thawed' storage space, which survives all reboots.One other thing I did to improve reliability is to run both a wired network and a wireless network. Each machine thus has 2 paths back to the internet (and the PRF server). So when someone pulls a network plug, or breaks off an antenna, the machine still keeps working... and in virtually all cases, no one at the FHC even knew that one of the network connections on the affected machine was down! I check all wired and wireless conections each time I visit the FHC for any reason, and I discovered the network outages and repaired them before anyone knew they failed. Fortunately, I've never had both networks fail at the same time. It's a 60 mile round trip for me to go to the FHC, so having good reliability is pretty important to me. I suspect that some of you out there may have even longer commutes to your FHC than I do.One issue that I have had in the past is that when I first set up the Mcrosoft Shared Computer Toolkit (similar to Deep Freeze but now outdated and not compatable with the SLC Web portal) I had shared the passwords with the director and one staff member for security reasons, with the request that they not be used without calling me first. Later, I discovered that on a number of occasions those passwords had been used without consulting me, and improper configuration changes were made (not maliciously, but out of ignorance) which caused problems. When I transitioned to Deep Freeze a few months ago, having learned my lesson, I no longer share the passwords with anyone at the FHC. I have written them down and placed them in a sealed envelope, explained to one of my adult children what was in the envelope and gave them that envelope, and requested that if I am incapacitated or die, that they are to get that envelope to the FHC director so someone else can carry on in my place.Obviously this is not a problem with Deep Freeze or the Microsoft Shared Computer kit, but a problem with staff not following my instructions, so I wouldn't lay the blame on the software. I suspect that much of the problem with systems being down prior to my calling as STS may have been caused by FHC staff making changes to computer configurations without realizing the ramifications of the changes they were making.Deep Freeze has definitely helped our FHC have a very high level of computer up-time, and very much reduced the time I spend maintaining the machines... and commuting.Dan Vester, STSPrescott Arizona FHC-----Original Message-----

Numerous colleges and public schools use DF throughout the country. Like Dan here, my FHC was plagued by viruses, spam, smut, and the like; until I received the calling the maintain our FHC and installed DF on our equipment. Now, I only go into the FHC to upgrade something or fix a problem that is NOT related to the patron computers' setup.When a DF modified computer is tampered with or an undesirable condition occurs, we simply turn-off the computer, restart it, and it is restored to its original condition (the way you set it up originally). Somebody left our security cabinet open and got to one of my Ghost rebuild CDs, attempting to "fix" some unknown (to me) problem. I found the CD in one of our patron computers.
