Introduction and questions
- Hello all,
First I want to thank those of you who answered my question about the
Lysine dosage for the kittens. It was extremely helpful.
I found this group while researching feline herpes on the net. I have so
many questions at this point, I do not know where to begin. I have been
breeding Burmese cats for about three years now, and starting with my second
litter have noticed that these kitties have a tendency to get upper
respiratory problems easily. I work with traditional lines. The URI problem
has been chronic in several of my cats. My vet consulted with a specialist
who suggested that the underlying problem might be herpes. She told me that
there are tests for this and other viruses, but her opinion is that the
reliability of the tests does not justify the cost. She also feels sure that
this is what I am dealing with.
So far the only treatment she is recommending is the Lysine. I have been
told about the availability of antiviral drugs, but have been told that they
are prohibitively expensive. Therefore the recommendation of the Lysine, and
possibly a holistic approach to this thing along with the help of antibiotics
for secondary infections. I have also been told that it may take some time
to see results.
The diagnosis does make sense to me, because all kittens and cats who
have gone to pet homes have stayed healthy and free of upper respiratory
symptoms, so it does stand to reason that it is stress related. I was also
told that if I were to spay and neuter everybody, place all my cats and start
over, the same thing could happen again, because the virus is in the air.
Please feel free to share your opinions of what I have been told. I need
to learn more about what I am dealing with here.
I started two kittens and one adult male on the lysine yesterday. the
boy is showing no ill effects, but it looks like the kittens have diarrhea
today. Has anyone noticed any side effects from using this?
