So sorry to hear about Sammy. It sounds like he had a long, happy life with you. I hope your memories of him will help you through this difficult time.

We had to lay Sammy to rest today. He was really bad off this
morning and we rushed him to the vet. He informed us that Sammy's
kidneys were now failing as well as his heart. There was nothing
more that could be done. So he was put to sleep. Sammy was part
Maine Coon, and we have learned through our research that Maine Coon
are a breed that have a predisposition for Cardiomyopathy. We have
wonderful memories of our baby, and his spot on the bed will be very
empty for some time to come. Although he lived a long life it is
still painful for him to be gone. Patti has informed me that she is
going to adopt the first kitty she see's that looks like Sam.
Although I've never seen another cat that looked like him (he had a
      racoon tail).
We want to thank you folks for all of the fine information that you
post here. Although I didn't post I did pick up a great deal of
info from reading all of the other posts in the group.

One thing I would like to stress is finding the right Vet. Sammy's
original vet diagnosed congestive heart failure, but did not
prescribe anything but Lasix until his condition had deteriorated.
Sammy's new vet was flabbergasted at how long the other vet waited
to put him on heart meds, and how little information he had given us
on exactly how bad Sammy's condition was. Make sure your vet is
giving you ALL of the information and if they don't then find a vet
      that will.
