how much pimobendan (Vetmedin) do most cats with CHF get?
- hello everyone
I am wondering how much pimobendan most give their heart kitties? esp if they have RCM particularly the endomyocardial fibrosis sort? Chloie's cardiologist said to give her 1.25 mgs per day but I only give her half that much as the original critical care doctor prescribed that. when I raised Chloie to 50 % more per day i.e. 9 mgs I saw no real difference in her behavior but when I doubled the dose to 1.25 mg (only on one occasion) she seemed more agitated and "speeded up". I am afraid to increase dosage bec I have read it can cause sudden arrhythmia and other bad things. at the same time, the forward motion of her heart definitely should be improved upon as her disease makes its ability to pump forward a lot more difficult for her.
what are people's views on a larger dose of pimobendan (vetmedin)? the cardiologist refrains from giving much of an opinion bec she says that there is no conclusive proof of its benefits for cats (although there are large amounts of evidence for its benefits in dogs)

- My Tiger gets 1.25 mg every 12hrs. So one whole tablet at 4:45am and again at 4:45pm. He does have a burst of energy about 30min to an hour later. His cardiologist says that lots of cat owners report that. Also, Vetmedin has been a lifesaver for Tiger. His vet last Thursday told me that tiger is still alive thanks to that drug. The Vetmedin is very important and does help the heart to pump more efficiently and at the same time helps to prevent the fluid accumulation since, well, it helps the heart work more efficiently. Tiger started with a half a vetmedin every 12hrs and as his conditioned worsen we went up to the full pill.I hope your little girl does well on this pill. It really is a miracle pill.Emily and TigerEmily Valentin-Baker, SSPLicensed Specialist in School PsychologyNationally Certified School Psychologist"Winners never quit. Quitters never win" ~ Mom
- Hi JosieMy Saphie takes vetmedin , she's started it a week after her RCM diagnosis , she takes 1/2 of a 1.25mg tablet twice daily, can't see I've noticed any changes in her behaviour once it been given, but I'm convinced it's these tablets that has kept her going.Mandy & Saphie
- Hi JosieI swear by this drug. My Trixi had a heart attack and was given no chance, but we were asked to try this drug. She took half of the 1.25 twice a day and made a recovery. It got her heart muscle beating again. Milli had 1.25 twice a day but she had a different condition, but she outlived her prognosis by 7 years in the end.So it depends on the condition really.Lyn
