We got the blood results this morning. The kidney values were massively increased. She has kidney failure and last night I gave her vetergesic for the pain. This morning she is on a drip at half the normal rate to try and flush out the kidneys, which is a huge risk for her heart. They think it was caused by possibly low blood pressure and came on suddenly. Has anyone any hope for me? The vet said it is not good but there is a chance and she spent the night purring and treading her paws on my bed so she isn't in any pain. I don't want her to suffer but I want to give her this chance. I just don't know what to do for the best. Her kidneys were working at less than 5%. Please give me some advice if you have been there. I`m devastated.

        Lyn,

My Sweetie had extremely high kidney values three different times, along with her CHF.  Her BUN was over 120 and Creatinine over 10, and with minimal fluids (I gave her subQ and didn't take her to the vet to be in an IV drip) I was able to get them to come down considerably, enough that she felt better.  Her BUN went down to about 68 and Creatinine the high 4's.  It was very serious and the vet didn't think she would make it, but she did, 3 different times.  When she passed away, it wasn't from her heart or kidneys, because she had just had bloodwork done the week before she passed from a seizure. I don't know what brought on the seizure, but doubt it was her kidneys or heart problems.

Hopefully the slow drip will help Milli improve.

Can you get Renavast in the UK?  It's a new supplement that helps with kidney failure.  Go to http://www.renavast.com to read about it. I'm not sure if it helps with very serious kidney failure, but it might be worth a try.  I have some I can send  you if you can't get it.  I had just bought a new bottle two days before Misty passed away, and I'd be happy to send it to you.

        We'll keep praying for Milli.

        xox,
        Carol

          Hi

Mary and Carol and a few others sent me excellent advice.

Thankyou so much for your positive posts. Milli is on IV slow drip for 6 hours today and then for the next four days or more as needed. She has had half the fluids and no sign of heart failure, breathing is 32 and heart rate 150. . They also stopped metacam and lowered lasix and vetmedin. I am hoping this is mechanical as Mary thinks, as Milli was begging for treats and scoffing (promise, only a little)  fish and chips the night before she suddenly crashed.I just think she needs to eat now, has been three days but vet isnt so worried as liver results perfect today. Her creat was 430 and urea 30.9 .  She is to have vetergesic only as a painkiller.

And I think I`m the one wil need oxygen.

Hi Lyn.  I think you're doing the right thing.  Yes, the hydration therapy that goes with kidney insufficiency works at odds with CHF. Your vet knows this, and you say that they are cautiously administering a drop, which is critical for the kidney issues.  I am sure they are going for "just enough" to help her kidneys but not so much that it worsens her CHF.

Are you a member of the feline CRF support board on Yahoo?  LOTS of people over there have dealt with both CHF and CRF.  There is also Tanya's CKD support group, and Tanya herself is based in the UK.  Do you need the links to join??

I have hope for you!!  A few years ago I had a beautiful Scottish Fold calico named Punkin.  She had been very lethargic, etc. but didn't really seem to be sick, you know?  When I took her into the vet, they said he kidney values were just horrible!  I freaked out of course.  They said, let's keep her overnight and give her some fluids.  The next morning her kidney values were 100% perfect.  She was just REALLY dehydrated, and this caused the kidney values to show so badly.  When the urine is really concentrated by dehydration, the tests cannot give you a true reading.

I know that balancing fluids in a kitty with both heart disease and kidney disease can be tricky -- but this is what you'll have to carefully do, keep in close touch with her cardiologist.  I'll bet that her kidney values are much improved his morning after the drip all night.

Milli is home for the night and seems bright and alert. She is licking at food which is an improvement on not interested. She has had all her fluids and remained heart stable and goes back for fluids tomorrow and Sunday and then review. I`m hoping she is stable and once the poisons are flushed out we can keep on top of it with fluids. She has vetergesic for the night and cerenia and all her usually pills but we are to hold back on the lasix and reduce vetmedin. Some of your stories have given me hope, she looks better just for the hydration. She hadn't done a wee in 48 hours but did one today at the vets.

So chances are fair. That's enough for me to try. Remember Trixi's chances were virtually zero four years ago. And with all the thoughts and prayers that's giving me a lot of comfort. The rest of her results were normal, liver and pancreas (we had the specific test done) were normal so no pancreatitis.  White blood cells were a bit low and she has raised cholesterol! No more chippy chips for Milli.

Thankyou for your support, at least she has a chance now. We'll know better in four days.

                    Lyn
