Kramer has hpertrophic Cardiomyopathy with history of CHF (sub q's given with unknow heart disease.
He is now a kidney cat on subq's. So far resting respirations are same. 20-24 and
he is taking great walks outside, even "trotting".  We give nitro-bid
ointment: 1/8 inch in ear 1 hour prior to subq's. Vets would like toincrease sub q's for
kid. numbers and add Vetmedin when doing this. He is already on 1/4 of Benazapril
in am (1.25mg), along with epogen, COQ10, B complex, insulin, phospherous
bidner, miralax, pumpkin, methylcobalamin 500mcg, etc.
My main concern is that I am scared to death to add anything
more/new to his regime. Does anyone have any direct exprience with Vetmedin?
      Is it safe? Side effects?
Below is my full lenght post to CRF board.
      Thanks for any help.
      Donna and KRamer.

      Hi everyone,

We had Kramer's kidney labs checked after 8 days on fluid increase from

50ml 2xday to 75ml 2xday. He is seemingly pretty good: eating pretty good, even

"trotting" on our little walks. The numbers are a little better than week b4, but

not that great. The one vet said he would benefit from increading fluids, BUT he is a heart

cat and it is a very fine blancing act. There is talk of adding Vetmedin to his

existing 1.25mg Benazapril to help with the fluids. Waiting to hear back from cardiologist

regarding cxray. Local vet said she had to look VERY hard to find just a little

bit of fluid/cloudiness. His respirations have stayed the same, along with weight.

We are due to get u/s of pancreas/kidney's next week. I am very nervous to add

another new thing as he is already on a ton of new things. He has missed his

last two weeks plus worth of epogen shots as vet's supply was ruined and with the holiday

it took me awhile to get it. They want me to restart that as well,e ven though his pcv is much

better (on many missed doses). He also gets nitrobid ointment in ear 2xday to help

heart with fluids. Has anyone any knowledge or experience with vetmedin??

Thanks to all over the weeks for their help and kind words. The subq's are a breeze now :)

        Hi

I have two cats on vetmedin. It is contraindicated in HCM but my Trixi had
a heart attack a few years ago and went into heart failure. She was given
no chance to live and I was asked if she could have vetmedin as a last
resort. Forward three years, she is still with us, her HCM is progressing slowly
but she is stable. Vetmedin was a miracle drug for Trixi.

Milli has two holes in her heart and keeps crashing into heart failure. She
is also on vetmedin. Both these cats are on a lot of other drugs too. But
        to me, it saved Trixi.

My cat with DCM was also put on vetmedin.  At the time of diagnosis, she was given months, at best, to live.   It has been over a year now and she is doing great!  I am sure it's a combination of the drugs she is on... also receives lasix, benazepril and plavix.  I would definitely say it is worth trying.
