Hi -- welcome to the group nobody wants to join. HCM is not an automatic death sentence. It sounds like you have a good cardiologist -- just do what he tells you. My little Tigger was also diagnosed with HCM at a young age, 6 months. He's been on atenolol, and you can't even tell he's sick. In October he will be 7. This disease manifests differently in each cat, so do keep an eye on your little girl. But just carry on. If you are always scared, she will pick up on that and know that something is wrong. Watch her breathing -- this is often the first sign thst there's trouble. It should be around 23-29 breaths per minute while resting. If it gets near 40, that's an emergency that must be dealt with immediately. I hope you have air conditioning, heat stress is really hard on heart kitties. Keep your little girl safe and happy and as stress-free as possible. Go ahead and play gently with her, she needs the exercise. Just stop immediately if she lays down or starts breathing heavy, etc. We will help you -- send you questions here!!

take care -- Michelle & Tigger Too in Toronto

Hi! I am so thrilled to have found you guys here.
My 7 mo kitten was just diagnosed with HCM. I'll post what her specialist's papers say:
Referral Xrays - severe batrial and generalized heart enlargement - no pleural effusion or pulmonary edema.
Echo - concentric left and right ventricular hypertropny, moderate left and right atrial enlargement. Moderate left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.

Her assessment says: Illyana's evaluatoin is consistent with HCM. There are moderate to severe changes that suggest that cogestive heart failure may develop at any time. given these changes the reccomendation is to start medications to attempt to slow the progression.

She is on Flurosemide 12.5 1/2 tab once dailt
Benazpril 5 mg 1/4 tab once a day
Atenolol 25 mg 1/4 tab once a day

She is also taking felovite 1/2 teaspoon daily

I have an appt with my vet on Monday for followup. He say her 10 days ago for an unrelated issue and referred us to the specialist here for more indepts testing.

To say I'm scared in an understatement. I recently (in Feb) lost my "baby" of 10 years and Illyana has been the joy of my life since I met her in March.

Any thoughts, suggestions and advise would be so wonderful!
      Thank you,
      Vickie
