Is anyone giving their heart kitties who also have CRF Cardizem/Diltiazem for heart issues? I'm trying to find out what the side effect would be to the kidneys if I give this to Snowball for her very rapid heart rate. The vet prescribed Atenolol, but she can't tolerate it at all... it makes her spew, and we don't need anything else to make her spew!
Someone on another group mentioned Cardizem and I wanted to ask you all first if you've had any experience with it with your CRF kitties.
I have to find something for Snowball's heart rate. It's always up over 200 beats per minute and lately up to 240. Her respiration is up around 40 to 44 all the time now and I'm getting scared. She doesn't have any fluid in her lungs or chest. We think her elevated heart rate may be from her hyperthyroid. She's on Tapazole (Methimazole), but it doesn't seem to be working that well. Her T4 was in the middle of normal, but her Free T4 was still slightly elevated when we had it checked in September, so we increased the Tapazole, but her heart rate is still elevated.
I'm worried about her kidneys. Her BUN in September was in the 70's now and her creatinine in the 4's. That's up from last June when it was in the 50's and 3's. Before I ask the vet for the Cardizem, I just wanted to ask here first to see if anyone can offer any pros or cons about it.
Any input is really appreciated.
