Hi, Judy.  SweetPete is doing great.  I cannot believe the resiliency in this little guy.  Not only is he acting as though nothing happened, but at 2 a.m. today, he got such a case of midnight crazies that no one could sleep.  He decided to jump back and forth between the two little towers in our bedroom.  They are over 4 feet apart and he just kept leaping from one to the other without a break for about 15 minutes.  Then he went for a personal best and took a 7 foot jump to the bed, settled down and slept until 9 this morning.  His breathing never made his sides ripple, no less heave.   How can his heart supply enough blood for those big leg muscles and not be able to stand less than a minute of stress for a blood draw?
If you or anyone has an answer for me, please feel free to write to me or post it.
      Gina

We almost lost Pete today, but he seems to be doing better now. If he makes it through
the next few hours, I think he will be okay again for a while. I knew from the cardiologist
report that he was a very sick little guy, but he has never shown any evidence of the
disease. Today he went to his regular doctor for a checkup and blood draw to see if the
thyroid medicine had kicked in and if it was the right dose. He was perfect for his
      exam...heart 170 (normal 130-240), respiration 36 (normal 20-30) so that wasn't too far
off for a cat after a car ride to the doctor's . Hs weight had held steady and his fur looked
thick and glossy. Then he was taken into the procedure room for the blood draw. He
stressed so badly that his heart couldn't handle the load. The doctor came and got me to
soothe him while they administered oxygen for a half hour. When it was deemed safe, I
took him home. He was fine for about 15 minutes, but then decided he didn't want to be
on the bed and jumped off and started to walk to the hallway. He managed about 5 feet
and collapsed, gasping for air. He tried again a minute or so later and again went about 5
feet and could go no further. He was breathing so hard and fast that I couldn't count
them. I just sat with him and cried. I called the doctor to ask if he were dying and what
could I do for him. Dr. Brown said he didn't think he was actually dying at that moment,
but said that it could happen at anytime without out any warning. As far as treatment all
that could be done was oxygen and lasix. I asked if he were in CHF and if there was fluid
in his lungs (that quick????)but the doctor said no. So why the lasix? Dr. Brown said that
basically there was nothing else to be done and it wouldn't hurt...sort of a Hail Mary play.
But it was his feeling that we just watch and wait to see if Pete could handle it himself,
since the car ride at that point was likely kill him from stress and fear before we could get
him back to the office . Anyway about an hour later (about 6:30) his breathing started to
slow down and looked more normal and he groomed himself a bit (he had urinated on
himself when they were trying to get blood). And now (9:15) I would say he is resting
comfortably. But I see what a thin line Pete is walking. It takes so very little to push his
heart to the point of breaking. Just the need for a little extra oxygen and the thickened
walls of his heart just can't pump efficiently enough to supply it. Tomorrow Dr, Brown will
call the cardiologist for suggestions on how better to manage Pete. So please keep a
good thought for my boy and hope that he has a bit of good time left.
      Thanks
      Gina
