Re: [FH] Anyone just treating with a diuretic?
- I am sorry I don't know your name. The treatment of diuretics only for HCM/CHF is not the best course of treatment. The diuretic will help with the CHF but will do nothing for the HCM. Think of it this way - you have a bacterial infection and a raging fever and you take only tylenol. The tylenol may help with the fever but you are still going to have the bacterial infection unless you take some antibiotics. Your kitty is need of heart meds too, like an ACE-Inhibitor or Beta Blocker. If you haven't seen a vet cardiologist, you should. Most regular vets do the best they can but know very little about heart problems.
To answer your other email, most kitties with heart problems develop CHF. And so, most heart kitties will end up taking one or more diuretics for it. The most common being the lasix(furosemide). Others are spironolactone and HCTZ for when the lasix isn't enough. As the disease progresses, most likely the CHF will too and more diuretics will be needed. I encourage you to read through past posting in the group. You will learn about the disease, progression and treatment. You can also just ask the group and we will help as much as possible. For a good start, you can search the postings for "new member" and the corresponding threads and you will get a lot of good starting pointers.
