Ascites help needed.
- Can anyone help me with their experience?
Milli hasn't got HCM, but has a large hole in her heart and all the
chambers connect. The valves are badly damaged and she is at risk of
right sided heart failure. She was born with this defect.
The last couple of weeks, we have noticed Milli has put weight on and
gone very round at the abdomen. She's an 18 months old Selkirk and
they tend to be large stocky cats so I put it down to fat gain. Her
brother Maxi (with HOCM) sees the dietician as he was 7kg, so they
are big cats.
My question is how can I tell the difference between fluid build up
in the abdomen and fat? I noticed this morning that she is more
swollen than usual and it feels very squidgy, but she's eating well
and managing her limited exercise. My vet is closed for the holiday
and I just can't afford to take her to her cardiologist today.
I know she isn't HCM, but maybe someone here can help with right
sided heart failure.
Thankyou so much
- Hi Lyn!
My Oliver does not have HCM but rather mitral valve dysplasia; tricuspid
valve dysplasia; and resolving/static left and right congestive heart failure
which apparently he was born with as he just turned 3 in July. The two valves
do not work correctly which have caused fluid around the heart and lung area.
Oliver is an F2 Savannah, weighs about 28 lbs. and stands about 16" tall paw
to shoulder and thus, due to his size, takes 120 mg. of furosemide (lasix)
daily. I give 40 mg. every 8 hours (as I am told, lasix only lasts about six
hours in the system) in addition to his other medications including
spironolactone (and some of which counter the bad of the lasix). The lasix keeps
the fluid off and until we stabilized him on his current cocktail of medication
he has not underwent CHF nor the need of any emergency cardiologist visits
since diagnosis back in June. He is consistently monitored by us and six
months of living with this disease and he is doing exceedingly well.
We pray every day.
Hope this information helps you and Milli somewhat and all I can offer is my
personal experience with ascites.
