This was a question about HCM and if stress could possibly bring out the gene that causes HCM and thus start the disease cycle........ From the Feline Health

Re: [FAN-H] Stress "bringing out" HCM

      From Dr. Kittleson himself:

      Jan,

A cat that has severe HCM and is either in mild heart failure or is on the
brink of going into heart failure can be stressed and go into worse heart
failure. Cats love to hide their clinical signs so this is not
      uncommon. For
instance, a cat that has mild and even moderate heart failure
      (pulmonary edema
      and/or
pleural effusion) will often look normal to an owner although if you
      counted
the cat's breathing rate it would be elevated. When that cat gets stressed
(goes to a veterinarian's office, gets in a cat fight, gets chased by
      a dog) its
heart rate goes up and its left ventricle gets stiffer, making it
      harder for
it to fill. When this happens the heart failure suddenly worsens and
      it looks
like the cat has an acute form of heart failure.
